Low income families build houses in cyclone prone areas

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

Goodliving.Eco Foundation is a social and climate action - non profit initiative - that builds climate resilient and green housing for low income groups.

We are currently working in villages in and around Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, which are cyclone prone. We realized the intensity only after we started interviewing the communities about their struggles. Here are a few voices from the community -

“During Gaja cyclone, our roof sheets just flew away and water entered our house while we were sleeping.
In the last 20 years, this is 4th house which I have constructed. My house is made of uncooked bricks, it may fall anytime”
 - Valarmadhy (44 year old, widowed woman with a 13 year old son, Edayanchavadi village, Tamil Nadu)

“In the rainy season, we get no sleep. Once when it was raining for the whole month, I couldn't sleep at all. I had to clear out the flooded water in buckets.”
 - Gowri (53 year old grandmother, living with husband and grand daughter, Puttunagar, Puducherry)

These are a few voices that bring out the struggles of communities, but there are a lot more. We intend to help them to build their houses, in a way that their houses will be climate resilient and permanent. We plan to do this with the help of local community partners (women self help groups). Another important aspect that will be incorporated in these houses would be that they would be built using green construction materials (as much as possible) and would use solar panels for electricity.

We are raising these funds to build 9 such houses, in a period of one year.
Goodliving.Eco are a team of architects and social workers who are motivated towards this cause. In addition, our volunteers include disaster management specialists, strategy consultants, social workers and green building experts.
