Kattaikkuttu or Therukoothu is Tamil Nadu's heritage theatre. Performed primarily in rural areas, its professional performers are not included in the cultural landscape of India. Overnight Kattaikkuttu performances are complex and demand hard physical work from its performers. The remuneration is minimal.
The Kattaikkuttu Sangam is a member-based association that supports Kattaikkuttu's rural performers, including for the first time also women performers. We organize regular training, workshops, new productions and the adaptation of existing plays to contemporary society. Every year the Sangam organizes a Performing Arts Festival that features, in addition to Kattaikkuttu, different performing art forms.
Your support is pivotal to enable us to continue our work, preserve Kattaikkuttu and its oral knowledge, and support the lives and livelihoods of professional performers, including women.
