    This fundraiser will benefit

    Kaasankuthi Lake

    from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

Goal: We are reviving Kaasankuthi Lake, which has gone dry due to severe weather change, in an effort to bring back water to the many small farmers and villagers around it. We will plant trees all around the revived lake and nourish them to enhance green cover for the future.
Location: Kaasankuthi lake is located in Adambai village, Pattukottai taluk, Thanjavur district, Tamilnadu. It has a 17 acre catchment area, and is served by a 2km inlet channel bringing Cauvery water released by Metur dam.
Present Situation: This lake has been dry for many years, and is now covered with fallen coconut tree trunks uprooted by hurricane Gaja, and by a  dense overgrowth of the invasive prosopis juliflora weed (seemai karuvelam in Tamil). The inlet channel bringing water to the lake, which used to be 10 feet wide, has dwindled and is blocked by debris, prosopis juliflora and waste.

Kaasankuthi Lake now.

Lake lead Asaithambi a local native, with guidance from WakeOurLake team, has already revived another Avalaneri lake in a nearby area and brought it to use.

Lake Revival: With the successful experience and given commitment from the villagers, Asaithambi and Adambai community are now looking to revive Kaasankuthi lake. WakeOurLake team will be guiding them in this effort as well.
  • The initial task is to remove the fallen tree trunks and clear the Prosopis juliflora shrubs which are abundant in the water storage area as well as in the inlet pathway.
  • The lake will be dug upto 2ft in places to level the lake floor.
  •  The lakeshore will be strengthened with the coconut tree root stumps and plastered with the mud dug from the lake.
  • The 2km inlet channel will be cleared of debris, weeds and waste and also widened and deepened to it’s original width.
  • Native Trees and plants will be planted around the lake. The plan is to plant trees in a small, controllable and expandable area, and then expand them organically. A walking trail will be laid along the planted trees so that the area is maintained clean.
  • Community fencing will be put up to keep garbage and waste out.
  • A long term maintenance plan and funds will be assigned to responsible locals to preserve their lake in the future.
