    This fundraiser will benefit

    Jai Bhim Nagar residents

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

On June 1st, BMC officials visited Jai Bhim Nagar in Powai, asking residents to vacate within 48 hours. Within a week, they arrived to raze over 500 homes. The homes were illegally demolished without any consideration of letting people retrieve their belongings. Many of them have also lost important documents and identity proof. This was done in spite of a government resolution that states that no unauthorized construction can be demolished between June 1 and September 30th.

You can find more details in this Indian Express article dated June 11: https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/jai-bhim-nagar-day-after-demolition-drive-residents-rummage-through-debris-to-recover-their-belongings-9378872/

How will your donations help?
  1. Loss of a home immediately affects livelihood, which is already uncertain on a day to day basis for most of the displaced residents. Your donations will help provide food, medications, and temporary shelter from the elements.
  2. Your donations will help all the volunteers on ground with their operations.
There are 600 displaced people in the basti, with around 150 families fighting to reclaim their homes. While they currently seek shelter on a nearby footpath, the funds raised will aid all displaced families and cover operational costs for volunteers assisting them. Here is a rough breakdown of how the donated funds will be used:
- Study materials (including school bags, notebooks, pencils, sharpeners, pen packets, crayons): Rs. 80,000
- Mosquito nets (250-300): Rs. 80,000
- Medical kits for all families (including PCM tablets, ORS sachets, Odomos, cough syrup, Combiflam, Citrazene, and sanitary napkins): Rs. 70,000
- Shelter materials (crucial with the monsoon here, including tarpaulins, bed sheets, quilts, and mats - 150 to 200 pieces each): Rs. 1,50,500
- Miscellaneous and operational costs for volunteers aiding the basti.
