My name is Maitreyi Chander, and I am an 11th-grade student working for CAPED India (Cancer Awareness, Prevention and Early Detection Trust). I created this fundraiser to raise money for setting up screening camps and awareness programs about cervical cancer.
In India, a woman dies of cervical cancer every 8 minutes. This number is shocking, as cervical cancer is 100% preventable through HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccines and the treatment of precancerous lesions. The chief cause of cervical cancer is HPV, which is transmitted sexually. Setting up screening camps can save many lives as cervical cancer is treatable and successfully cured if caught early. Awareness programs educate people about cervical cancer and the steps one can take to prevent it. A survey conducted by CAPED in December 2020 showed that 73% of women had not gotten a PAP smear test or HPV vaccination despite being aware of cervical cancer.
My goal is to raise at least Rs.50,000 by 1st August 2021. The funds will go to CAPED India to be used to set up screening camps and awareness programs. Each screening camp costs Rs. 50,000 to build and benefits 100 women. I encourage you all to donate to this fundraiser to save lives and spread awareness about cervical cancer.
