Introduction:
Thousands of Indian Handloom artisans left the craft during the 2 years long pandemic due to low demand in the market. With the pandemic, they also got affected by fake products flood in the market operated by power loom manufacturers. Presently thousands of artisans are not practising the craft as they are searching for livelihood somewhere else. Thousands more are on the verge of leaving the craft. In effect some kids stopped going to school, there are old members of those families who are not getting adequate attention etc. Last but not least such an exit trend of artisans will make handloom crafts vulnerable.

The crisis:
As we all know Indian banks don't monetise handloom artisans sometimes because artisans don't have papers ready and sometimes banks don't trust poor people. As a result majority of handloom artisans in India work for traders/brokers or just as bonded labour. Very few artisans who want to work independently by starting up something on his/her own are generally trapped by local money lenders due to sky high-interest rates.
We, Handloom Foundation tried to provide bulk work to handloom artisans so that they can generate money to start their own ventures and break out from the dependency on local lenders. We bring benefits to almost 30 artisan families (for detail please visit https://handloomfoundation.org/d2c). Hundreds of people placed orders to get products made by those artisans. We managed to do that in a tough time in Covid....but surely that's not enough.

What do we want to do?
Through this fundraising initiative, we want to bring direct monetary benefit to 200 artisan families. Through this support, they can restart the craft journey with the investment. Here the artisans will get the money to buy raw material (raw fibres/yarn) and working capital. After that, we will make a bridge between retailers and those artisans so that they can start selling what they will produce. At Handloom Foundation we also provide market intelligence and design support to the poor artisans so that they can stay relevant in the present-day market.

We Handloom Foundation don't enjoy any Government or CSR grants hence your support is the only way we can make this initiative successful. We need INR 60,00,000/- to support 200 artisan families in West Bengal. We are limited with our resources hence we have to limit ourselves to a small region of India only.

How the fund will be used?
  1. To start a production artisans need to buy raw material which includes yarn, dye, sizing material etc.) and for cotton production, the minimum investment is INR 20,000/-
  2. For this production process, one needs a working capital of INR 10,000/-
To empower one family, we need INR 30,000/-
We are targeting 200 families hence we need INR 30,000X200=60,00,000/-
Donations to 'Handloom Foundation' are eligible for tax exemption under section 80G of the Income Tax Act. Tax exemption is valid only for Indian citizens and for donations in INR only.
