Home signifies safety, but what does a child do when it becomes unsafe?
According to a survey by the non-profit Shakti Shalini, 4 in 5 Indian households have children who have witnessed gender-based violence at home; 3 in 5 children are victims of sexual and physical abuse, and more than 50% of these cases are from urban poor communities. Violence is a constant in a child’s life while growing up in low income settlements.
TARA has partnered with five government aided schools in Delhi, working towards creating safe spaces and a violence-free community these children whose parents are daily wage labourers - rickshaw pullers, vendors and housekeepers. Over the next two years TARA will spread across 48 schools and conduct counselling sessions and workshops covering such topics as consent, harassment, crimes, personal safety and sexual hygiene to help these students grow out of the vicious cycle of violence. In this pursuit, we have identified and trained 10 college champions from various Delhi colleges who will help us conduct these workshops.
By the end of two years, we intend to impact ~7,200 children from vulnerable communities, with a sustainable group of over 100 college students who can nurture a safe space for the people around them.
Your small contribution of INR 500 will help as many as 2 children lead a dignified life beyond violence. Safe space starts at home, and so does charity. Be a Do-er; be a donor!
