The Covid-19 global pandemic is hurting all of us across the world and it a special time for us to come together and help each other even more than we normally do.

We all know that there is also a huge economic fallout, beginning to affect every aspect of society, but it may not immediately come to mind that the impact on charities that entirely rely on donations to survive is truly devastating.

Ganga Prem Hospice, Rishikesh (GPH) which has served terminally ill cancer patients and their families, through clinics, home care, and inpatient care, over the last 15 years is also struggling to be able to continue its services in this existential crisis.

Our Efforts During The Pandemic:
* In these extraordinary times, Ganga Prem Hospice remains focused on getting care and supplies, both medical and essential, to its patients, their families, and those receiving bereavement support from the Hospice.

* Since India decided to flatten the curve of spread by locking down nationally, our healthcare and social work professionals have provided Covid-19 relief kits (of essential items) to families of terminally ill cancer patients and those who have been bereaved by the loss of the family’s sole wage earner.

* In keeping with the Global Palliative Care and Hospice Standards being followed during the pandemic, GPH continues to provide telephonic- and e-consultations to existing and new patients through our dedicated helpline numbers.

About Ganga Prem Hospice, Rishikesh:
* Ganga Prem Hospice is a spiritually oriented, non-profit hospice for terminally ill cancer patients.

* Hospice provides medical (palliative), social, emotional, and spiritual support to patients and their loved ones, as they face life-threatening cancer.

* Located at the foot of the Himalayas on the banks of River Ganga at village Gohri Maphi in Rishikesh, Ganga Prem Hospice was started in 2006 and is now the first NGO in Uttarakhand to get recognized as a ‘Registered Medical Institute’ (RMI).

* Being one of the handful of hospices pan-India, we endeavor to become a world-renowned palliative care organization in the sacred space of end-of-life care and service.

* The mission of Ganga Prem Hospice is also aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), working, amongst others, primarily in the area of ‘Good Health and Well-Being (Goal#3)’.

* Nearly all the patients of GPH, both inpatient and outpatient, hail from poor or troubled communities and families with few if any other sources of medical or emotional support.

How your donations will be used:
(Estimated Requirement = INR 50,00,000)
* Since inception and with the facility buildings becoming fully operational in 2017, the day-to-day operating expenses have been possible only through public funding and fundraising.

* Our patients desperately need our services, now and later. As expenses due to the pandemic mount, unfortunately, donations are witnessing a significant downtrend from its usual funding sources in India, Europe, and the US.

* Appropriate, for-specific-purpose, utilisation of donated funds, and 100% transparency by way of proactive disclosures regarding the use, are of critical importance to Ganga Prem Hospice.
Here is what your donations will be used for:
-- Critical: Three months’ operating and human resource expenses ( INR 12-15 lacs/month | ~INR 45 lacs/quarter)
-- Covid-19 Relief Kits for three months ( ~INR 2,500 / kit | INR 1 lac/month) – medical and other essential items
-- PPE Kits ( ~INR 1,000 / kit | INR 40,000 / month ) – single-use only, for field healthcare workers and riders
-- Bereavement Support

Help us help those fighting a battle longer than this current pandemic. Cancer and other terminal conditions are slow and painful, and the patients are ‘more susceptible’ to Covid-19. You can ease the pain, now more than ever.

Greetings from Ganga Prem Hospice Rishikesh!
We hope your family and you are well.

Anne Frank famously said, “No one has ever become poor by giving.”
In fact, all lives so touched have been enriched.

We express our sincere gratitude to you for having given so generously to the Ganga Prem Hospice, Rishikesh (GPH) fundraiser.
Through Milaap  (lit.  Union), our campaign has been able to raise funds amounting to INR 31,36,597 donated by 415 philanthropists.

Team GPH had set out clear financial and operational goals that we expect our campaign to help us achieve. The primary fundraising goal was INR 50 Lacs via a direct appeal to public.

The main operational goals are to continue services without interruption due to the ongoing global pandemic and enhance, as far as possible, Covid-19 related efforts to serve the most affected terminally ill cancer and other patients.
We also want to ensure that the hospice survives the downturn with minimal loss of occupation and compensation.

Current collections of ~INR 31 Lacs can take care of almost two (02) months of operational expenses of the hospice.
During the months of April and May 2020 amidst the lockdown in force, Team GPH reports the following key statistics of operations
  1. Number of Vehicle Trips (ambulance, hospice vehicles for home care) – 110
  2. Home Care Visits (Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun) – 36
  3. Telephonic Home Care Visits (critical care) – 218
  4. Home Care Deliveries (Covid-19 and other support items) – 28
  5. Families Served (most affected, bereaved) – 74
In times of stringent movement restrictions and rapidly developing governance guidelines, our team has attempted to operate at global standards in service.
Inpatient admissions are being organised following all advised protocol and the staff and facility have remained safe.

We would like to share a direct-impact story and a few pictures that might interest you. Woven into these is the message of tangible giving effects tangible difference. Most of the patients and families directly served by GPH live at national minimums or below. Support from you makes this possible.

Kavita is a 5 year old girl, diagnosed with retinoblastoma along with suspected TOF. Her family includes her dad, who is a ragpicker, and mom who is a housewife taking care of the other three siblings. The father earns less than 2500 rupees per month and struggles to cope with daily living. Kavita has been diagnosed since the past year. The family has no social support and is very ignorant of the importance of treating the child. They, however, try to take the child for regular check-ups, along with taking chemotherapy treatment after admission at HCV, home care. Sometimes they are unable to make it as they (father) don't have the money to take her by public transportation. GPH has been in contact with the patient since September 2019 and supporting the patient along with her family this is to provide quality of life.  Yesterday, the patient was visited by the GPH team and was assessed with severe symptoms such as high-grade fever, abdominal pain, shivering, nausea, and poor appetite. Immediately the patient was referred for further management to HIHT-CRI. She is currently admitted to the hospital. There is no public transport plying during the lockdown and GPH helped in assisting with the transport. The patient and the family is very grateful for the services provided by GPH during the crisis. The amount raised as at 24 May 2020 stands at INR 27,31,250. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your contributions and very importantly, your confidence in the cause and us. Thank you 🙏

Sharing the campaign bit.ly/GPH_Donation via WhatsApp and social media platforms has helped garner support from friends who might have met Ganga Prem Hospice for the very first time. We request you to please post our campaign on your FaceBook, Instagram and YouTube pages if you can.

It gives Ganga Prem Hospice immense encouragement that our appeal for survival has moved many who understand the growing need of end-of-life care for terminally ill beings and essentially for any being in need of support during her / his last days.
Palliative Care, with which our patients are served, comprises primarily of symptom management, pain control and complementing therapies to create a safe physical and mental environment for the patient and carer(s). Being spiritually oriented and completely free of charge, this care is intended to help alleviate suffering to the extent possible and should the patient be open, provide a comfortable transition through the moment of death.

Ganga Prem Hospice, Rishikesh remains committed to continue serving right through this global crisis and with your continued support, is confident that it can.
We will share more updates over the next couple of weeks sharing details of tangible results that your support has yielded on ground.

16th May 2020
Greetings from Ganga Prem Hospice, Rishikesh!
Hope you and your wonderful family are well and staying safe.

We at Ganga Prem Hospice (GPH) would like to express our sincere gratitude for supporting our fundraiser at these very difficult times.

In Week 01 of the campaign at the time of this update, thanks to donations from 194 generous Indian and overseas supporters, an amount of INR 14,85,820 (Indian Rupees Fourteen Lacs Eighty Five Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty) has been raised.

With your support, the GPH fundraiser has been able to achieve more than 25% of its target requirement of INR 50 Lacs. Thank you for your graciousness. Please continue to show us your support.

As shared in the campaign story, Ganga Prem Hospice is raising these funds to cover its Covid-19 relief and regular operating expenses for the next three months.

We are now ready to request Milaap.org to withdraw an amount of INR 14 Lacs and bring it into the account of Ganga Prem Hospice, Rishikesh. These funds will be used to cover expenses already incurred in April 2020 and expected in May 2020. The details of expenses are shared below:

  • Covid-19 Relief Kits (Medical & Essential) — ~INR 2 Lacs (nearly 50 ‘most-in-need’ families being supported on a weekly and fortnightly basis)
  • PPE KitsINR 1 Lac (04 PPE Kits @ INR 1000/kit procured as sample; purchase order for a first batch of 100 kits being prepared for procurement)
  • Fuel — ~INR 20K (>2,500 kilometres covered by GPH vehicles in over 250 return trips for home care nursing, relief kits’ delivery and regular administrative reasons)
  • Staff SalariesINR 14.8 Lacs (current on-roll staff strength is 51)
  • Monthly Operating Expenses — ~INR 5 Lacs (includes medical supplies, groceries, general admin expenses and bereavement support)

This brings the total expenses over April and May 2020 to over INR 23 Lacs to continue operating the inpatient facility and regularise our Covid-19 relief and medical efforts in the field.

With your continuous support, we believe that Ganga Prem Hospice, Rishikesh with its team of 50+ healthcare professionals will be sufficiently equipped in every way to keep serving our terminally ill patients and bereaved families, through this global pandemic.
