The Covid19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown has severely affected artistes in India. In particular, the already marginalised and neglected Folk artistes depend on daily performances to support themselves and their families.
The current scenario with the indefinite lockdown is abysmal. With no state support and meagre to no savings, the folk artistes have a bleak future even starvation, facing them.
Every year, Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography hosts the Dr Maya Rao Kathak & Choreography Conference. The annual conference named after the legendary dancer-choreographer Dr Maya Rao that features some of the best known performers, speakers and Dance academia from across India and the diaspora community is in its second year albeit in a virtual Avatar. Due to the global pandemic crisis, this year's conference goes digital, one of the first ones in the country today.
The conference this year will support 10 families of these folk artistes in Karnataka region for the next 5 months. With the help of our collaborator, folk researcher- Sneha Kappanna, we have identified 10 families that need urgent help with food ration and other essentials. Our aim is to support these families for the next 5 months. The budget for this endeavor comes to INR 6 Lakh.
All proceeds from this fundraiser go towards supporting these families. We hope to reach out to many more artistes in future. Details of the beneficiaries will be shared with donors on request.
