Women make up a disproportionate share of India's informal economy, whether as street vendors or domestic workers, and they are often vulnerable to particular risks and problems as they navigate their work life.

In April 2024, we embarked on a crucial initiative to address the safety concerns faced by domestic workers—primarily women—in central New Delhi. The Data for Good survey, conducted within an affluent neighborhood in the Delhi-NCR region, aimed to understand the challenges these workers encounter on their daily travel routes. We meticulously gathered data on various issues, including safety concerns at different times of the day, children's safety and care, spatial and area-based safety issues, and suggestions for improvement.

Building on the insights from our survey, we developed three informative pamphlets designed to enhance women's safety through technology. These pamphlets outlined practical ways to utilize smartphones for personal safety, including location-sharing features, GPS navigation, and digital safety measures provided by police and government apps and web services. The pamphlets will be printed and prominently displayed on notice boards within the Residents’ Welfare Association of the Tilak Bridge Officers Colony to ensure maximum visibility and impact.

We are now partnering with the Resident Welfare Association to provide smartphones and data cards to domestic workers and other working women in need. These smartphones would be a great stepping stone towards their autonomy, offering them access to digital technology we often take for granted, and bolstering safety during their commute as well.

As society continues to evolve and face new challenges, Project Data for Good remains committed to identifying and addressing potential safety issues that impact women everywhere, both now and in the future! Your support will be immensely helpful — please press the donate button and join us in creating a safer, more inclusive society for women in India.
