JMJ School at Devarahipparigi, Sindagi Taluk, Vijayapura District in Karnataka, is a unit of Society of Jesus Mary Joseph, Bangalore Province. We started the school in this rural area 8 years ago to provide quality education to the deserving children in this village.

This is a relatively undeveloped area of the State. Families here are very poor and their living standards are very low. Their life is a constant struggle for survival. We specially chose this area for our school because access to good education is so critical to transforming the lives of these people.

Covid 19 has had a devastating impact on children’s education. Clearly, children with no access to online education especially in the rural areas have been left behind. They have forgotten all they have learnt. They need to be taught the basics again. A recent nationwide survey showed that children in the rural areas are fast moving to mass illiteracy.
 
The pandemic has also dealt a huge blow to the livelihoods of families. They now find themselves unable to support their children’s education. As a result, we see an increasing number of children dropping out of school. This is a crisis situation. We need to act immediately to keep these children back in school.
