The global pandemic has toppled the world. India’s response towards the crisis has been unprecedented with the world’s largest lockdown. Amidst the huge lockdown, the daily wage earners are among the worst hit – the section which was overlooked by Indian Government in planning of lockdowns.
Stories of hunger deaths and food insecurity among poor workers escalating rapidly are now regular feature in newspapers and media.
Fear is rampant and so is our compassion – we find hope in each other. As a responsible citizen, Ms. Divya Nagar has taken an initiative to feed the poorest of poor through her initiative Action Against Hunger in Lucknow.
Driven by her unflagging zeal, the lady is on her mission to feed the poor in and around her neighbouring areas of Gomti Nagar Extension, Lucknow. Daily wage earners, scrap dealers, maisons, construction workers, rage pickers - the lives of whom has been left shattered by COVID-19.
Every alternate day, Action Against Hunger provides one packet of food essentials to the needy families. The packet comprises of wheat flour, rice, tea and a disinfectant soap. The needy are the daily wage earners with no money left, who could not go back to their hometowns or stranded by their employers but they all now stand at brink of starvation.
“It made me uncomfortable the fact that poor people of my country were dying not only because of COVID-19, but hunger as well. The gloomy pictures of migrant workers walking unwavering on raods without food shook me and this gave rise to my initiative, Action Against Hunger. The thought of this unfortunate section of our society shifting down into beggary should not come true” says Divya.
Distribution at a abandoned construction site at Sector -4, Gomti Nagar Extension
The distribution includes food essentials such as atta, rice, tea packets, soaps etc. This initiative is completely driven out of my personal savings, contribution from my kind friends and neighbours.
Action Against Hunger has fed over 200 poor people in slum areas of Gomti Nagar Extension, Sector 4 to 6. The initiative keeps the donors updated about the distribution and its reach. The feeding drive would now be extended to stray animals as well.
