2019 has been another year of unprecedented levels of air pollution in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. In fact, the situation is so bad that the Air Quality Index is in the environs of 450. In this gas chamber, perhaps the most adversely affected are our traffic policemen, who often have to rely on handkerchiefs or surgical masks for protection. Such equipment is hardly adequate for these levels of pollution and this endangers the health of these valiant policemen. As students, we get holidays to stay at home to protect ourselves. However, the policemen do not get any leaves and are constantly exposed to the poisonous air. The Traffic Police Department issues pollution masks but they prove to be grossly insufficient for the personnel. This fundraiser intends to raise funds to buy effective N95 masks for the traffic policemen. There are currently 6,600 employees of the Delhi Traffic Police. A good N95 mask ranges from Rs 80/- to Rs. 120/-. Therefore, our goal of raising Rs. 10,00,000 will ensure that a mask reaches every traffic policeman in Delhi. After buying the masks, we will present them to the Delhi Traffic Police Commissioner. We want to do this as soon as possible, latest by the first week of January 2020. We should realize that we have a responsibility towards the society and that the policemen who stand guard and manage traffic in Delhi are doing it at the cost of their health. Breathing air in Delhi is equivalent to smoking more than 20 cigarettes in a day. As citizens of Delhi and India, it is our duty to not let these sentinels await their doom. We therefore urge you to donate as much and as soon as possible so that we can protect those who protect us.
