My Friend Debayan Deb Barman is presently in the ICU with mechanical ventilation support, since April 16, 2022. He is suffering from Cardiac Amyloidosis, a very rare genetic disease. Daily expenses are amounting to around INR 80000 and the family is unable to afford it. His treatment can be continued only with the generous support of benevolent hearts as the estimated cost at present is 2500000.
Debayan was a brilliant student and stood first both in graduation as well as in post-graduation. Being humble, soft spoken, amiable and gentle by nature, he was liked by most of the people he came in contact with. However, because of his honesty and integrity, once he started his professional life, he started facing challenges.
Starting his career as a school teacher in Dumdum, Kolkata, he became a lecturer at Tripura college, followed by Assistant Professor at Mallarpur College, Rampurhat, West Bengal.
Initially diagnosed as heart enlargement at Mission Hospital, Durgapur and R N Tagore, Kolkata, subsequent consultation with Dr. Robert Mao, Apollo Chennai, in October 2010 confirmed Cardiomyopathy (heart unable to pump blood easily) and Pericardial Effusion (excess fluid in heart). Because of the condition, he had to visit Apollo, Chennai every year. In 2013, he started suffering from heart palpitations. After consulting doctors at BM Birla, RN Tagore and Peerless, it was confirmed that he was suffering from Atrial Flutter and Atrial Fibrillation. In 2013, the effusion was mild, in 2017 effusion turned moderate, but in 2018 effusion became severe. As a result Dr. Mao suggested removal of the fluid. Several specialists were consulted for second opinion at SSSIHMS Hospital, Banglore and Narayana Devi Shetty, but all were of the same opinion. Finally in 2019, Dr. Mao removed 1200 ml of excess fluid from the heart and further suggested pericardiectomy (removal of a portion of pericardium).
It is really remarkable that in spite of all these conditions, during 2010-2018, Debayan not only earned his Ph.D, he attended 3 oriental/ refresher courses, conducted / presented papers at several seminars and had several paper publications and even edited two books (https://www.amazon.in/SHAKESPEARE-INDIA-DEBAYAN-DEB-BARMAN/dp/9381245746/ref=sr_1_3?qid=1650612097&refinements=p_27%3ADEBAYAN+DEB+BARMAN&s=books&sr=1-3 and https://www.amazon.in/Independence-Indian-Theatres-Critical-Prespectives/dp/B08BTWTS7K/ref=sr_1_2?qid=1650612097&refinements=p_27%3ADEBAYAN+DEB+BARMAN&s=books&sr=1-2)
In January 2020, specialists at Vellore were consulted for second opinion before pericardiectomy, who further suggested biopsy of the heart, as they were suspecting that Debayan was suffering from fabry disease. Since the corona started, they had to come back to West Bengal and stay at home.
Since October 2020, his diet reduced to half as he was feeling full. Initially hesitant to go out due to pandemic, since February 2021 a few gastroenterologists were consulted who diagnosed that there is excess fluid deposition in liver and several muscle loss of the whole body. Finally in March 2021, Debayan went to AIG, Hyderabad. The gastroenterologist referred him to cardiologist, Dr. C. Narsimhan. Debayan was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiac Amyloidosis. Since then he has been using C PAP machine. With Amyloidosis, he had two options Heart Transplantation or Tafamidis, a new drug developed by Pfizer which had to be imported from US. Since heart transplant was the last option, efforts were made to procure the drug free of cost from Pfizer, US. This needed a detailed and long process of approval both from Pfizer and the Government of India. Dr. R Muthaiah Subramanian, from Dr. Narsimhan’s team initiated and finally ensured that the drug reached Debayan by November 2021. During this period, Debayan had to visit AIG at regular intervals. In August 2021, during one such visit due to minor brushing with the shoe he started bleeding profusely and was diagnosed with vericose vein. By October 2021, because of fluid deposition his belly swelled so much that he was unable to move. When doctors were consulted at RN Tagore, Kolkata diagnosed it as tense ascites. In October itself he was rushed to AIG and catheter for peritoneal dialysis was started in November 2021. Repeated tests and consultation compelled Debayan had to stay at Hyderabad. But he was able to complete editing another book (https://www.amazon.in/Critical-English-Bengali-Detective-Fiction-ebook/dp/B09QY33DRP/ref=sr_1_1?qid=1650612097&refinements=p_27%3ADEBAYAN+DEB+BARMAN&s=books&sr=1-1) and has submitted final manuscript of a book of poems written by him for publication . After returning to West Bengal on 12 January 2022, on 17th January he had very low BP low and was feeling breathless. He was diagnosed COVID positive and was admitted to R N Tagore. His right lungs got affected and fluid was getting deposited in the lungs, 1500 ml of fluid was removed from lungs at RN Tagore Hospital where he remained admitted till 7 February. But since he was feeling breathing trouble in spite of constant oxygen support, his family was unable to bring him to Hyderabad. Finally in March, he was brought to AIG with oxygen cylinder and 650 ml of fluid was again removed from the right lungs at AIG from right lungs. Debayan was unable to walk. During this stay, it was found that fluid was coming out from the skin of the stomach and further investigation revealed that the catheter for peritoneal dialysis has pricked lumph which caused leakage of protein. Subsequently he was unable to lie down because as soon as his back touched the bed he started coughing. Moreover, he was unable to swallow anything but fluid as his mouth was completely dry. With this condition on April 14, 2022, he was admitted to AIG emergency ward and was administered BY PAP intermittently. On April 16, his BP and sugar drastically lowered and heart rate increased to 150, for which he had to be admitted to ICU and was put under mechanical ventilation support.
Debayan is an avid reader and an ardent nature lover. He keeps writing poems whenever he is in serene surroundings in the midst of nature. His eagerness to fight for his life is evident from the books he has been able to publish under such critical conditions. Please help him.
