SWAPS is a business-cum-social initiative that was founded in March 2021 as an entrepreneurial undertaking as part of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, with its unique product offering of swappable sleeves on spectacles — created to allow for design variability on existing spectacles without needing to change the entire frame. Through its pro-social efforts, SWAPS aims to facilitate access to specialized eyewear for individuals from underserved communities in India, specifically focusing on providing women and children with visual impairments with the necessary diagnoses and eyewear they require to fully participate in society.
We are in the process of creating extensively-researched factsheets to raise awareness about visual impairment issues faced by individuals in India, as well as provide information that destigmatizes visual impairment and provides healthcare solutions for the same. Additionally, as part of our social mission, we have conducted three eye camps at I-India, a Jaipur-based NGO that aims to uplift children from impoverished backgrounds by providing them with educational and professional support. The eye camps were conducted in collaboration with eye doctors to increase access to diagnoses for visual impairments for children.
We have created this fundraiser to support our initiatives with partners such as the National Association for the Blind, to support the printing and distribution of quarterly braille newspapers for children across Maharashtra. The ongoing fundraiser will be used to support these efforts as well as new eye check up camps with other partner organizations in the future.
Additionally, we partnered with Hamari Pahchan, an NGO that works with individuals from underprivileged backgrounds across sectors including education, healthcare, unemployment, and food security, in order to conduct eye camps to diagnose any visual deficiencies experienced by children under Hamari Pahchan’s care. Once children were diagnosed, we worked with a local lens manufacturer to create personalized eyeglasses for the children in need.
Further, we also collaborated with BMC schools in Mumbai to organize eye testing camps at the Love Grove School, Worli, Mumbai. Through this fundraiser, over 400 children were tested and those identified with vision impairment were supported with free of cost eyeglasses in order to help improve their health and future outcomes. The funds will also be used to continue to support Hamari Pahchan’s incredible ongoing efforts for children. We have successfully provided the NGO with 50K INR from our fundraising efforts to support their efforts.
