    Baby Likith

    from V.Kota, Andhra Pradesh

Every day my son would wake up with an innocent smile on his face and kiss me on my cheek.  Just a month ago, he called me 'Amma' for the first time and my happiness knew no bounds. But now he cries all the time, and is growing weak and tired with every passing day. He’s too little to understand what is happening to him and all I can do is hold him close to me and comfort him. It’s been one week since we found out our son has cancer, and we've already spent 1.2 lakhs for his treatment. We can't even afford proper meals and after exhausting all our savings and borrowed money, we have no way left to save him.” - Latha, with tears in her eyes

Little Likith’s health began deteriorating just when he had started to say his first words

Likith was diagnosed with jaundice when he was just 3 days old. But with timely medication, he began recovering from it. He would get recurrent fevers and severe cold, but with medicines, it would soon subside. Every thing was normal with Likith until he started having blood in his stools two weeks ago. Worried, Latha and Suresh took him to the local hospital in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh but they couldn’t find any answer for his deteriorating condition.

Likith, before cancer took over his life

“Since the day he was born, I’ve been very protective of him. Even if he got a small fever, I would be scared and take him immediately to the doctor. I was terrified when I found blood in my son's stools. I didn’t know what was happening to him.

Likith has blood cancer that will spread to his entire body if not treated in time

As per the local doctor’s advice, Likith's parents took him to Bangalore, Karnataka for further investigation. After a few tests, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia, a type of blood cancer due to which abnormal cells are formed in the bone marrow. It progresses aggressively and worsens quickly if not treated. Likith needs to undergo chemotherapy for 6 months to get cured of blood cancer.

“He was so happy and cheerful that I never thought anything like this would happen to him. Now I feel helpless and cry every moment for I have nothing to save my son. Every time he gets fevers, he doesn’t eat at all. He stays up all night crying and no matter how much I try to comfort him, I cannot ease the pain."

Latha’s husband is away from his family, working hard to meet the treatment expenses

Suresh works as a tractor driver. He earns Rs 130 per day and now has to spend Rs 10,000 every day for the medicines and blood tests which is ten times more than what he earns. They have no resources left now. They've exhausted all their savings and all the money they borrowed, which they also need to pay back along with high interest.

“Every day my husband calls me and asks about our son. He works so hard, and can't come to the hospital often because of that. With the money we've borrowed we could only get the tests done and pay for initial expenses, now are short of money for the treatment. I ask him every day how will he arrange money for the treatment and he says that he has asked every person he knew, but he hasn't been able to find help till now."
