Background

This is the Fundraising Team, comprising of Azadians -across 1985-2020 graduates, who have come together for this fund raiser. The team includes (Himanshu-2020, Sourav-2019, Sagar-2018, Subhendu-1995,  Neeraj-1993, Samaresh-1987, Supriyo-1987, Ranjoy-1985.)  along with a large team of 30+ Azadians as Fundraisers. Additionally, the Fundraiser Music program is being driven by Subrata Kolay-1990.

You all might be aware of the havoc that the COVID pandemic has created & especially with the marginalised sections of the society. Among the millions affected, a small group of people are the owners & staff of various establishments in Azad Hall (Azad Hall is a hall of residence for students at IIT Kharagpur. It is one among the 21 halls of residences).

Two weeks prior to Junata Curfew, many IIT's started closing down the institute and asked all the students to vacate their hostels with in a week. KGP was no different in the league. As the institutes gates shut, establishments in all halls of residences went out of business. These included the canteen, stationary, juice shop, coffee shop, Xerox shop, laundry shop & others.

All the establishments in Azad Hall were affected too. Twenty Six (26) persons working in these establishments, are without any employment and income since mid-March this year. The situation will likely continue till December as the Autumn (Fall) semester for the academic year 2020-21 in IIT Kharagpur has moved online.

KGP'ians who are reading this, can't deny the emotional attachment we have with these individuals. Especially in Azad Hall one would definitely remember  the night canteen of Ravi Da till 4 A.M every day, the hot poha & patties of Sam-D which used to substitute our breakfast, the cold banana shake of  Pradip Da after playing Badminton, the hot atta-Maggi of Nesci Da & nevertheless the last minute print-outs of admit card at Swarup-Da.

In this spirit of nostalgia & the valuable services that these folks have rendered us, we ask all Azadians & other well wishers of IIT Kharagpur to come forward to help these heroes. These people are etched in the hearts of several generations of Azadians & no Azadian would ever want them to shed a tear in these challenging times.

Please join us  (& the massive team comprising representatives from 30 different batches!) in raising this money. We are aiming to give 6 month salary to all the staff and owners of these establishments. Let's get together and show the tempo for our hall.

UPDATE To Fundraiser - Targets and Disbursement Plan – Aug 2
An interim decision has been taken to increase the target to 18 L with all payments higher than current disbursement schedule to be collected for unforeseen Covid casualties and emergencies in the families of Azad Hall Workers - who do not receive a significant  Institute Aid.

UPDATE To Fundraiser - Targets and Disbursement Plan – July 27
On July 27, a meeting attended by some members of fund raising team was held to discuss the item of disbursement.  The resolutions were discussed with the remaining members of the Fund raising team and finally, post an active consideration of all pros and cons,  the following points were agreed upon and adopted.
The following were the key items discussed and agreed upon :
  • Payments will be made to individuals who have cleared approved KYC requirements of Milaap.
  • All members of temporary workers group who do not clear approved KYC requirements will be strongly urged to complete the process of KYC requirements.
  • Exceptions will be considered on an individual case by case basis only when (a) and (b) have completely failed. At this point, there are no exceptions being permitted. This position will be reviewed a month later.
  • Based on the feedback received, it has been decided to keep all money raised for individuals outside of this specific fundraiser by specific alumni representatives outside of this fund raiser as separate and not to deduct the same from this fundraiser.
The reasons for this decision are as follows :
  • The Alumni paid this amount based on personal connect and before the idea of the fund raiser was discussed
  • The Alumni paid these amounts to some specific individuals and not the others
  • The Alumni paid these amounts not as COVID relief primarily but based on their personal desire to help the individual and therefore the amount should be considered as more of a welfare assistance for the person for long number of years of connect and service
  • Impact of (d) will mean that the target needs to be increased by 2.5 Lakhs approximately
  •  Buffer needs to be added if required.
  • Payments will be made to Beneficiaries on a monthly basis through their Bank Accounts (based on a,b,c)
  • Fundraiser date will be extended to Aug 8, 2020 ( the Date of Notes, Strings and Beats -2020 )
  • The team is also ok to raise additional money in this fund raiser to counter further challenges as the crisis seems to be continuing beyond Dec. 31, 2020. However, no specific decisions regarding the additional amount to be be collected were discussed or agreed upon. As such, if fund raised exceeds the target, that money will be kept in the fund to counter future issues.
  • Gobinda, as a special measure, will be paid INR 25000. He is paid full salary by HMC. This will be a specific consideration for support for long service by Gobinda.
