    Arvind Shekar

    from Bengaluru, Karnataka

Hello! I am Arvind Shekar form Hoskote Taluk, Bengaluru. Following my Bachelor’s at the Indian Institute of Science and Master’s at the University of Cambridge, UK, I was selected from a pool of about 1000 top students in theoretical physics worldwide and received an offer to pursue a 4-year Ph.D. in Quantum Gravity (Mathematical Sciences) in the prestigious Quantum Gravity group at the University of Southampton (one of the best universities in Theoretical Physics in the world). I will be working with Prof. Marika Taylor, a distinguished student of the legendary Prof. Stephen Hawking. I require your help to support my studies.

My expenses are as follows:

Tuition fee: 17064 GBP per year for a duration of four years = 68256 GBP or 70,68,330 INR
Conversion rate: 1 GBP = 103.56 INR as on 10 July 2021

My Background:

Hi, I am Arvind Shekar, a student pursuing research in Theoretical Particle Physics. I have completed my 4 year Bachelor of Science (Research) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore: the number one institute in India. Following this, I completed my 1 year Master of Advanced Study in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom securing a percentage of 92.3% (University of Cambridge is ranked 2nd worldwide in Physics and other fields and has produced about 121 Nobel Prize winners and notable scientists such as Newton and Stephen Hawking). During my Bachelors at IISc, I also published a paper on how Gravity behaves at quantum scales (AdS/CFT; String theory) in the Journal of High Energy Physics which has been cited by about 80 authors worldwide (Link for my publication - https://inspirehep.net/authors/1771816?ui-citation-summary=true ).

Why I need your help:

Following my Master’s at the University of Cambridge, I was selected from a pool of about 1000 top students in theoretical physics worldwide and received an offer to pursue a 4-year Ph.D. in Quantum Gravity (Mathematical Sciences) in the prestigious Quantum Gravity group at the University of Southampton (one of the best universities in Theoretical Physics in the world). I will be working with Prof. Marika Taylor, a distinguished student of the legendary Prof. Stephen Hawking. I was supposed to be funded under the Presidential scholarship scheme from UK. However, due to the unforeseen pandemic caused by COVID-19, the funding has been cancelled for international students such as myself. My supervisors at the University of Southampton have been trying their best for the past one year to secure funding but due to the COVID-19 situation, this is becoming impossible.

My Research Interests and Life Goals:

It has always been my ambition to do research in the frontiers of fundamental Physics and understand the laws governing our Universe. All the decisions I have made since I was in school have been to facilitate a future in this direction. Several scientists worldwide have been in this pursuit for centuries. We have understood how several fundamental forces/ particles behave at the micro (quantum) through macro (cosmological) scales and we have developed a theory called the Standard model which captures it all. But a glaring hole in this is that we haven’t yet understood how gravity (one of the four fundamental forces in our Universe) behaves at high energies and small scales. This problem of Quantum Gravity has been a challenging open problem and has been my ongoing work on which I have published a paper in JHEP. I would like to work further on Quantum Gravity and understand our Universe better (understanding Quantum Gravity will be paradigm-shifting to Physics comparable to what Newton and Einstein achieved). I intend to work on this and several other fundamental problems towards understanding our Universe, throughout my life. I would be very grateful if you could support my Ph.D. studies by contributing as much as possible.

After my Ph.D., I intend to continue research in academia and come back to India and serve in all respects in my expertise as much as I can. In addition to my research, I intend to promote research in India by supporting interested people. India is recently investing in Quantum Computation which also falls under my field of expertise and I intend to make my contributions towards this. In addition, I would like to contribute towards the research and academics in the top institutes of India such as TIFR and my alma mater, IISc. Apart from my passion for science and research, I love teaching. Teaching helps me better understand my concepts, gives me new realizations, and also gives me a sense of satisfaction when the person being taught understands the concept. I also want to contribute to society by disseminating knowledge.

I am reaching out to you because I have tried and run out of options to pay for my Ph.D. Any contribution will help, and I sincerely thank you if you can spread this campaign, move it through your networks or help in any other way. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at arvinduniqc@gmail.com, as I would like to be as transparent as possible with this campaign and its funding request! I would be very grateful and it would be of immense help if you could help my Ph.D. studies by contributing as much as you can.
