“When he was 4, we were told that he has just one month to live because of his spleen, but our Ankush is a fighter. He made it through that, and we thought the worst was behind us. We didn’t think in the years to come, he would fight death again. As each year passed by, Ankush realized what ‘cancer’ meant and what would happen to him if he didn’t get treated. Now, he’s 15 and all he asks the doctor is ‘Will I survive?’ but there is hope. He finally has a chance to beat cancer for good, but he needs a bone marrow transplant in 10 days, and I have nothing left to save him.” – Sakaldev, Ankush’s father

In March, Ankush turned 15. There were no celebrations, no friends to sing for him and no gifts. This birthday, Ankush wanted just one thing – to finally be free from the pain of cancer. But Sakaldev and Sangeetha are helpless. After years of medical expenses, they have nothing left to give their youngest son the transplant that can save his life. Ankush needs a bone marrow transplant in 10 days, without which, he won’t make it.

Ankush’s pain and suffering can finally come to an end – he can beat cancer

Ankush was first diagnosed with cancer when he was 11-years-old. He was immediately started on chemotherapy and in October last year, his family could finally breathe a sigh of relief; they thought had beat cancer. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before Ankush started feeling weak again.

We thought he had beat cancer for good, but he fell sick again. His fever wouldn’t subside, he constantly complained of a headache. Soon, his hands and legs started hurting so much that he could barely move. I think he knew that it wasn’t because of a mere infection or fever like we had told him the first time. He knew that it was something worse, but I didn’t want to believe that his cancer was back.”

In February, Ankush’s blood cancer relapsed. He has been undergoing chemotherapy ever since, but it isn’t enough to save him anymore. Ankush needs a bone marrow transplant at the earliest to survive.

After spending lakhs on his treatment already, his parents can’t afford the life-saving transplant

Sakaldev, Sangeetha and Ankush’s two older brothers are now more worried than ever, but Ankush has braved through the pain and does his best to stay strong for his family. Even in the hospital, he asks his brothers to get him his math and science books so that he can study. Ankush misses school and his friends terribly and is eager to get back on his feet. But amidst all his positivity, there is a gloom that he carries around.

“We all know what will happen if he doesn’t get treatment, but we don’t talk about it. We’re trying to do our best, but after spending lakhs over the past few years, I can’t afford 17 lakhs for his bone marrow transplant. I work in an export company and earn around 8,000 per month. It’s not enough to save him. We’re getting closer to the date of the transplant. Only 10 days are left, but we’re nowhere close to being able to afford it.”
