Alok, a 14 year old teenager, is well known among his classmates and teachers as someone who is generous, kind, reflective, and a passionate football player. Alok comes from an economically disadvantaged community and lives in an urban slum in Mumbai that lacks basic amenities. Alok’s father is the only bread earner in his family of six people. While life has always been challenging for Alok, his strength to rise above his circumstances is born out of necessity.
However, this time, life has thrown at him a gruesome battle that he alone cannot fight. In November 2022, Alok’s health took a turn for the worse and in January 2023, after multiple visits to doctors and hospitals, he was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia (B-ALL Cancer).
Over the last few months, Alok’s physical condition debilitated. Alok is currently receiving treatment at a Govt Hospital in Mumbai at a subsidized rate where he is undergoing chemotherapy and taking injections for his bone marrow. He will be needing treatment for the next one year which will lead to a total expense of 8 lakh INR (approx. 10K USD). This would include medical expenses for chemotherapy, injections, medicines, and tests prescribed by the doctor from time to time.
Life is unfair and we are already, at birth, divided by thick lines of privilege or the lack of it. Because Alok’s economically disadvantaged background will hinder the completion of his medical treatment, it won’t even allow him to have a chance at fighting cancer. Please consider donating to his medical fundraiser so he can complete his treatment and be on the path to recovery. Because someone else would do it for you because human life is fragile and the only hope we have at the end of it is in each other and in our shared experience of this world.
This medical fundraiser is the initiative of Alok’s current and previous teachers from Teach For India. We hope for him to return to the classroom, finish his schooling, play his favorite sport - football, and just be a regular teenager with his friends all over again. We hope you can help us help him.
