Hi, my name is Saksham and my father is one of the bravest cancer survivors.
I am 17 years old and a student of 12th standard. My mother is a loving homemaker. My father shares the family business along with my uncle. He is the sole earner of the family, our backbone, but his illness broke us apart.
In 2012, he developed some problem in his teeth and consulted a dentist. The dentist gave some medicine but also advised for biopsy. We got frightened just hearing the name of biopsy. That was the time we became alert and contacted Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.
We were relieved to know that everything was under control and there was no sign of cancer. However, doctors advised him to come for a checkup every 3 months, so that they could detect any sign of cancer at an early stage. This was just a precautionary measure and my parents diligently traveled 1200 kilometers every three months to make sure everything was fine.
It was a difficult period for our family as regular traveling and stay in Mumbai was expensive. My father's business also suffered during this period.
After 6 years, in May 2019 my father has been diagnosed with mouth cancer. We were devastated as the previous 4 biopsies from 2012 to 2018 didn't show any signs of cancer. Now, the doctors have advised going through chemotherapy followed by surgery. The process would take 3 to 4 months of treatment.
Coming from an honest, hardworking and middle-class background, I am the only saving my father has. The years of treatment and travel has exhausted us financially and the future is frightening.
The process of chemotherapy, surgery and related medical test will cost around 7 lakh rupees. The hospital charges, stay, travel and medication will cost around 3 lakh rupees. This is a big amount for us and we need some immediate help.
