If you haven't heard already, construction of Navi Mumbai International Airport has begun at Panvel.
This land, used to be collection of villages, which have now been abandoned and flattened for the construction. The villagers left tonnes of rubble and over 400 plus animals behind. These animals, once dependent on the villagers for food and water, are now walking miles to find nothing but mud, rocks and dust.
The site preparation involves breaking down hillocks and boulders and levelling the ground. Furthermore, the construction equipment, destruction of water bodies and constant movement of rocks and earth have injured many animals.
A group of Activists have been feeding the animals. Everyday, they make their way to the site, walk through barren land and pick up stray dogs and cats who are often famished or injured. They feed these animals each and everyday. They also carry water to fill up the water bowls placed at the site.
It is the responsibility of the Government Body and the Contractors of this project to rehabilitate these animals. We are appealing CIDCO to build a Shelter for the animals affected by this project. However, the battle is long and a mammoth task. A tender has been floated and a piece of land has been identified for the shelter. Because of elections, there has been a delay in the paper work. The Government body is going to give out the contract to a local NGO to handle the maintenance and working of the shelter.
GVK Infra has provided a great support to us. We are currently spending RS 5000 per day just on food, out of which Rs 3500 is being sponsored by GVK. We have hired a vehicle and a feeder to feed these animals, salary and transport is also an expense. We also take care of the treatment of injured animals at the site and admit them to hospitals as when and when needed.
