    child of Damvar Shahi

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

Damvar and Sikha’s heart skipped a beat when they noticed that their little son, Aahan is having difficulty in breathing when he was just 5-months-old.  His heart started beating very fast and he was breathing rapidly. We were scared to death and took him to the doctors. He was doing fine for few months with the medicines but suddenly this October, his condition worsened,” says a tensed Damvar. They are in Mumbai now, struggling to afford a surgery for their baby who is suffering from a congenital heart disease.

The young parents lost their first child to a failing heart

Every time they see Aahan having breathing trouble, they are reminded of their first-born who couldn’t make it because of a similar heart problem.

He was premature and was in the NICU after his birth. But in spite of everything that we tried, we couldn’t save him. Now when I see Aahan going through the same, I am afraid that I would lose him as well. He needs the surgery at the earliest but how can I do that without help?” - Damvar, father.

The baby has a hole in his heart that mixes up the pure and impure blood in his body

Tetralogy of Fallot is a heart defect which is a combination of not one but four problems. All of them together prevents the circulation of the oxygenated blood in the body.

“He is very weak and tired. Often he wakes up in the middle of the night gasping for breath. The sight in itself is so scary - everytime this happens, I feel that this is the end,” - Sikha, mother.

'I know that there is a cure but it just makes me more helpless knowing that I wouldn’t be able to afford it'

Damvar works as a helper in a small restaurant in Thane and earns about Rs 7000 per month. He lives with his in-laws at a rented place in Mira Road.

“My in-laws have been very helpful - they have helped me by letting me stay at their place and also given me some money for Aahan’s treatment. But how much more can they even do? I have already spent about Rs 50000, I need Rs 6.5 lakhs for the surgery - there is hardly any way I can do it,” - says a dejected Damvar.
