Introduction
Donkeys play a crucial role in many communities worldwide, serving as essential assets for transportation, agriculture, and livelihoods. However, they often face neglect, mistreatment, and exploitation due to inadequate welfare standards and lack of community awareness. This proposal outlines a comprehensive project aimed at improving donkey welfare through community engagement, veterinary service capacity building, advocacy with the government, promotion of alternative livelihoods, and introduction of mechanisation as a sustainable alternative to donkey usage.
Goal
To address the prevalent donkey health and welfare issues in Beed, Latur, and Nanded districts of Maharashtra through targeted interventions through partnership with local organizations.
Location:
Districts of Nanded, Latur, and Beed in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Population: Approximately 7,000 (2,000 to 3,000 donkeys in each district)

What We Want to do:
FIAPO seeks to strengthen local organisations to bring about concrete improvements in the conditions of working donkeys in Nanded, Beed and Latur districts of the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Through these organisations, we plan to provide direct services of food, water and medicine, educate donkey owners and community leaders, engage the State government and district administration to strengthen animal protection mechanisms, and lastly, invest in innovations to replace the use of donkeys through mechanisation.

IAF along with FIAPO operating in partnership aims to improve the lives of Working Donkeys in the districts of Maharashtra namely:
Beed, Latur and Nanded comprising the Marathwada region with a local ground partner Dharma Donkey Sanctuary to attain the following objectives:
Improve the health of donkeys, focusing on body condition scores, vaccination coverage, and wound management.
● Reduce malpractices through education and awareness among owners and stakeholders.
● Foster innovation to alleviate the burden on donkeys in daily activities.
● Build the capacity of local organisations to independently work on improving the condition of working donkeys
● Identify and train volunteers to act as Animal Advocates, linking them with SPCA.
This project thereby requires a funding worth 30Lakhs to successfully meet the objectives, which is attached below:
