Although these women are an indispensable part of middle and higher income households world over, domestic workers are more often than not treated as ‘outsiders’. For years now, these domestic workers have fought for dignity at workplace, labour rights and other employment benefits and one such organization championing the cause, especially in Karnataka, is Stree Jagruti Samiti.
Co-founded by Namma Bengaluru Awards’ Citizen of the Year 2016 Geeta Menon in 1988, the Samiti is working to ensure recognition, dignity and social protection for these underprivileged house helps. The organization has also been pressing hard to take this fight at both state and central level.
What they need your support for
Protect the senior citizen domestic workers: It’s tragic, but true that our country has several domestic workers aged between 60 years and 80 years. Due to the nature of work, these senior citizen domestic workers suffer from a host of health issues, forcing them to retire from work early in age. Sadly, domestic workers in India do not have any social security, no pension and are also not documented as workers anywhere.
Keeping this in mind, the Samiti plans to kickstart an initiative where you can sponsor a senior citizen domestic worker for Rs 2,500 per month or Rs 30,000 per annum. The initiative will cater to the overall well-being of these domestic workers, which includes nutrition and health care. If you help the organization raise Rs 2 lakhs then it will be possible for them to define a process and execute the initiative for 75 such senior citizen domestic workers in Bengaluru and 20 each in Mangalore and Belgaum.
