Lack of proper sanitation facilities in our rural schools has been a major reason for girl students dropping out and discontinuing their studies. There are only a few functioning bathrooms and the ones present suffer from lack of maintenance. One of Smile Charitable Trust major current projects involves constructing clean and well-maintained washroom facilities in Karnataka. This problem of toilet facilities is a major issue all over India. Our USP is maintenance of restroom after construction for the next 20 years.
We started the SMILE Swachalaya campaign about an year ago with the main agenda of constructing toilet facilities across schools in Karnataka having predominantly girl students. As we started visiting the schools, we realised that most of these are co-educated. Hence, we started construction in these schools too. We have now successfully completed one school with 18 units of toilets.
We realised that most of the toilet projects had become redundant and unusable due to non-maintenance, so our USP is the maintenance of toilets for the next 20 years after construction. Meaning this is what differentiate us from others.
We take responsibility of paying the janitor's salary and supplying the toilet inventories from time-to-time. We also have initiated a task force of volunteers who train, conduct workshops & spread the awareness among the students about hygiene & cleanliness.
Breakup of our financial requirements
1. On an average a single school(Strength 250 Nos) would require 6-7 Toilets (Cost of conventional toilet Rs.60,000 per unit) thus amounting to Rs. 4 lakhs Approx
2. The maintenance of a school toilet that would include Janitor's salary, toiletries and other requirements if any works out to Rs.12,000 per month or Rs.1,44,000 per annum.
3. Total cost per school is Rs.5,44,000
4.18 Schools works out to Rs.97,92,000 our Target requirement
5. Approx.5000 students & teachers would be benefited.
