Dear All,
Shreyashi Ghosal, a first year English Honours student in the college where I am an Assistant Professor, Swami Niswambalananda Girls', Uttarpara, Kolkata, has just lost her father. The family is heavily in debt, and all their assets are presently mortgaged or pawned.
The girl is talented, and we would like very much to help with her continuing education.
Her father passed away from obstructive jaundice, and the family has lost everything in the due course of having to arrange for his treatment.
Not only is it a lower middle class family, but almost have nothing to fall back on. We are trying for a part time of full time job for the mother, and for her, but we want to try for her to keep studying. As it happens so often in India, girls in this position are married off far too quickly, and to grooms not very amenable to charity. Please let us ensure that the family survives and she can continue her education. Her father wasn't a pensioner and ran a small supply business, which can neither be managed nor immediately sold for lack of paperwork. Even if it is sold later, it won't amount to much, perhaps not even enough to repay their loans.
Their food and rations have been arranged for the next couple of months. The money that is collected here will go towards her education and to ensure that they are able to pay back their debt.
