When I got home a few days ago, my all-too-cheetful security guard looked distracted and forlorn. His daughter was getting married and instead of reveling in the celebration, Shivanna was crumbling under the financial pressure from having to take care of everything without any support.
"I'll come home and give you the invitation!" he said with his eyes sparkling on Friday. However on Monday, he didn't meet my eyes as he said, "I'm sorry, the invites are over. I could get only a few printed. Please come regardless." I understood and told him there was no need for any formality. He relaxed and told me what was happening.
Shivanna lost his wife to dengue 6 years ago. Since then, he worked hard for over 12 hours a day, come rain or sun, to earn and care for his daughter. He supported her education, their rent and household expenses on RS. 10,000/month salary. She is now 21 and ready to get married to a nice man from a good family.
As all father's dream, he wants to give her a wedding she can remember to the best of his capacity. However, with today's scenario, the expenses are not as affordable as he thought. He is already knee deep in debt after spending the wedding fund he had in his daughter's name.
"Choultry is asking over RS. 1 Lakh ma'am. Food is more expensive than I imagined. I'm trying to get the least possible but even that is too much for me."
