“He was born on Sunday night and they gave him to us. But the next day, the doctor said he had blue feet and he was taken away again.” - Avinash
Mamtha and Avinash's baby boy was born on May 13, 2018. In a day, he was found to have very less oxygen in his blood due to a heart defect. Now that his lungs are stronger, he needs a surgery immediately. He is in the ICU at the moment supported by machines and medicines.
Barely recovered, Mamtha sleeps in hospital seats
The baby's delivery was through a C-section because the baby was overdue. When the baby was taken away Mamtha was very distressed. Concerned for her well being, the doctor recommended she be reunited with the baby. Now, Mamtha sits out in the out-patient area day and night, waiting for her baby to get better.“She is here all the time. She rests on the hospital benches. I tell her to go home and take rest, but she is too upset to leave the baby. She visits him once every two hours. I don't know what to tell her, she is very disturbed and keeps worrying about what will happen.” - Avinash
The baby is kept close to the operation theatre so he can get a surgery at the earliest
While the doctors have allowed Mamtha to visit the baby any time, Avinash can visit him only during visiting hours in the ICU. The baby's blood oxygen levels are constantly monitored because even the smallest change can quickly turn fatal. Till his heart defect is fixed, he needs to be kept alive. Avinash is running from pillar to post to make the surgery happen.“He moves slowly like it is very painful. But he opens his eyes and looks at us if he is awake. We only hear his voice when he cries and it gives us hope to carry on. We haven't even thought of a name for him. We just want him to live – somehow just stay alive till we can save him.” - Avinash
Avinash has exhausted all his resources and has no one to turn to
Avinash has worked very hard to secure a steady job. He had to quit education after class 12 and start working to feed the family. He learned basic design skills and does DTP work for a company in Bangalore. In this time of difficulty, he has no one to ask for help.“The company where I work really helped, but how much can they also pay? I am used to taking care of problems on my own. Only this time, no matter what I do – it does not look like it will be enough.” - Avinash
