For people like us, a family is everything. My humble house was always overflowing with relatives. They never left our side. But, last year, in July, we lost our family because my son was diagnosed with cancer. Yes, everyone who stuck to us, scattered like pigeons when they heard that my 3-year-old has cancer.

I am a bus conductor. Life was fine. Even with this salary, I managed to keep my family happy. My wife, Chaitra, is the most loving woman I have known. She gave me the biggest gift of all, our daughter, Keerthana, who is now 4 years old, and our son, Ruthik, who is now 3 years old. Everything seemed perfect for us until Ruthik fell sick.

It started with a small lump on his neck. I thought it was the heat. It kept growing. So, I took him to a local hospital. None of their medicines worked. They referred us to HCG. By then, the lumps had started appearing all over his body. For 7 months, Ruthik has been getting chemotherapy. 3 years old, he can hardly string words together, and now this disease has made him ask me, “Appa, did everyone stop talking to us because I going to die?”

At first, the symptoms were not painful at all. In fact, Ruthik remained his cheerful and playful self. If it was not for that huge lump, you would think he is completely healthy. Even when he had so many injections, vomited because of chemotherapy, started losing his hair, and felt pain from within, Ruthik smiled.

I understood my son was more like me. Family was everything to him. His mother, sister, cousins and all elders made him smile. When people left us, Ruthik began to wonder why. He started asking painful questions. He began feeling pain.

We have spent over Rs. 13 lakhs in these 7 months. Nobody helped us and so, I had to borrow from strangers. When I ran out of funds, I had to switch hospitals. I discovered that Ruthik needs more than chemotherapy to survive. He needs a surgery. The next one year is going to test us all. I have never felt more helpless. We have no money. We have no emotional support. All we have is a little bit of hope that the strangers out here can give us a hand in saving our son.

You are more than family to us. You are equivalent to God. Please, I pray for a miracle. Only you can help us now to save our son.
