Zilla Parishad High School - Yenmangandla

    from Mahbubnagar, Telangana

Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS) in Yenmangandla Village of Mahbubnagar District is not like your typical rural high school. The school began functioning 125 years ago as a primary school and in the last 25 years has been an exclusive high school. It is spread across 5 acres and is located in one of the most backward districts of India, catering to the most marginalised sections of society. In fact, out of the 347 students in the high school, 140 students belong to Scheduled Castes, 67 Scheduled Tribes and 135 students belong to Backward Classes.

Despite being located in one of the most-backward regions of India, ZPHS Yenmangandla has some truly outstanding achievements to its name. Some of them include:
  • Sakura Science Exchange 2017: One student, from the school, went to Japan on a science exchange to showcase an alarm device for the deaf and dumb. This device was created with the help of the teachers from the school and is currently being reviewed for a patent!
  • National Science Fair Award 2017: For the alarm device for the physically challenged, the school also won a National Science Fair Award, Bhopal in November, 2017.
  • INSPIRE Science Fair: In 2016, ZPHS Yenmangandla was the first school and only school from Telangana State to participate in the programme.
  • Festival of Innovation (FoIN): FoIN is a unique initiative of the Office of the President of India to recognise, respect and reward grassroots innovations and foster a supportive ecosystem. The school was the only school from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to participate in the fair during 2017. In 2018 as well, we will be the only school form the state.
  • Visits to Rashtrapati Bhavan: The dedicated teachers from the school have taken students on field trips to meet the President of India – not once but four times!
Needless to say, the 12 teachers from ZPHS Yenmangandla, are amongst the most dedicated teachers not just in the district but in the country – Mr T. N. Sridhar, a science teacher from the school has received the Best Teacher award from the Government.
Inspite of having many achievements and being recognised for them, the school is lacking woefully in infrastructure. The school has achieved so much in the field of science despite not having even one functioning laboratory and out-dated equipments.

The schools current laboratory:

"Bunsen burner" with chemistry models

Zilla Parishad High School in Yenmangandla, like many government schools, faces a dearth in funding. The school's aim is to create model laboratories so they can continue teaching science in more interesting ways which goes along way in keeping children in school and reducing the high drop-out rates. The school has been doing well despite having not having any facilities but the modern lab equipments will allow more students in the school to understand science which is so crucial to development.
Apart from creating modern science labs, the schools will also use the funds to procure 126 desks so that students can finally have a place to sit and not on the floor. Finally, with the funds, the school will also purchase a computer which will allow students to gain some digital literacy skills.
