The Association of People with Disability (APD) is a non-governmental organization working in the field of disability for the last fifty six years. APD aims to empower persons with disability to become active, contributing members of society. At any given time, through its wide-ranging institutional and district development programmes, APD directly touches the lives of approximately 30,000 Persons with Disability (PWDs) and builds capacity of another 20,000 stakeholders in disability space, including Government Staff and NGO Partners.
APD, operating with an annual budget of over Rs. 150 million with 234 staff, deploys grassroots rural and urban community programmes that include therapeutic services, mobility aids, integrated education, advocacy, horticulture, mental health and livelihood.
Our “District Disability and Development Programme” is operating in four districts of Karnataka: Chikkaballapur, Davangere, Bijapur and Bengaluru. Here we work with government agencies, self-help groups and other stakeholders on identification, assessment, referral, capacity building, lobbying and implementation of disability rights, to encourage the system to make much-needed provisions for people with disability. Currently APD is working with over 10,000 PWDs in these four districts. For more details visit www.apd-india.org
Why is APD India raising funds for Bijapur only?
There is a limited knowledge and expertise of Government, Stakeholders, VRWs, etc in dealing with PWDs and therefore APD through its rich expertise in the field of disability has been able to provide support to the rural areas especially in Bijapur.
The Government has already offered to extend their support by providing subsidized boarding facility for the trainees as well as directives to the various departments regarding deputing the Village Rehabilitation Workers (VRWs), ASHA Workers, Inclusive Education Resource Teachers, Community Aid Workers etc.
APD has been offering support to PWDs in Bijapur district for the last 3 years. APD directly trained and supported 1,687 PWDs in Bijapur last year.APD intends to improve quality and scale of its training programs at Bijapur through use of ICT and connected Remote Classrooms with Bangalore as the hub.
The trainers/community workers, who work with children/youth with disability will be taken through structured sessions on how to teach children with disability, meet therapeutic needs of children/youth and also overall rehabilitation work required to ensure a person with disability is functionally and financially independent. Our Master Trainers at Bangalore will conduct interactive classes through use of ICT for training Teachers, Community Workers and parents who will create positive multiplying impact in terms of education, therapy and overall rehabilitation on over 6,900 PWDs in the first year itself.
The project will also provide basic & advanced IT training using software & hardware for youths below 23 years of age at Bijapur Districts equipping them to earn a livelihood for them.
During year one, project Prerana only focused on Basavana Bagewadi and Bijapur taluks of Bijapur district. For year two, the project is focusing other three taluks of Bijapur district i.e. Sindhagi, Muddebihal and Indi taluks. Also we are doing a refresher course for year one beneficiaries who are from Bijapur and Basavana Bagewadi taluks.
