Cyclone Gaja has done a colossal damage to the Cauvery Delta region of Tamil Nadu on November 15. More than hundreds of villages are still left in dark without the basic amenities. It will take at least a month to restore the basic. The worst part is the irreplaceable loss of their livelihood and livestock. Everyone needs your help!
Specifically with farms and plantations, it needs a special long term plan to help the farmers to restart their livelihood and people are in immense need of funds.
Plan for removing lakhs of uprooted trees from the plantations, clearing debris from the farm and restoring the land is still unclear and we need help from experts.
Alternate crops or plantation for these lands are humongous tasks considering the lack of manpower, electricity, water and financial availability.
E.g: A single coconut sapling could take 3 to 8 years depending on the variety, and other conditions. There is no income until it is ready for harvest. There are other micro industries dependent on these plantation harvest and they are affected as well.
The environmental havoc created is so huge. Imagine the amount of carbon these trees had trapped and now that there are no more trees, its created a massive imbalance in the environment and ecosystem.
The funds will be used to
- Clear debris that includes buying machines
- Restore land ready for new plantation
- Buying seeds / saplings and manpower support given the demand
- Provide livestock the needed until farm is ready for next harvest
- Provide support for plantation workers
