    Malnourished children

    from New Delhi, Delhi

"Malnutrition is not just a lack of food, it's a lack of nutrients.
It is both a cause and a consequence of poverty."

Malnutrition is a serious issue in India that affects a large proportion of the population, especially among children and women. Malnutrition refers to the lack of proper nutrition, either due to insufficient intake of essential nutrients or due to poor absorption or utilization of nutrients by the body.
According to the Global Nutrition Report 2020, India is home to the largest number of malnourished children in the world. The report states that 37.9% of Indian children under the age of five are stunted (low height for age), 20.8% are wasted (low weight for height), and 34.7% are underweight (low weight for age).
The prevalence of malnutrition is higher among children from marginalized communities, such as those living in rural areas, those from low-income families, and those belonging to lower castes and tribes.India is home to 46.6 million stunted children, a third of the world's total as per Global Nutrition Report 2018. Nearly half of all under-5 child mortality in India is attributable to undernutrition.Half of all deaths in children under 5 are attributable to undernutrition; undernutrition puts children at greater risk of dying from common infections, increases the frequency and severity of such infections, and delays recovery.
Malnutrition also affects women in India, especially during pregnancy and lactation.
The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 5 (2019-2020) found that 17.3% of women in India are underweight, and 22.9% of women aged 15-49 have a BMI of less than 18.5, which is considered undernourished.
Several factors contribute to malnutrition in India, including poverty, lack of access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities, poor maternal and child healthcare, inadequate food intake, and limited availability and affordability of nutritious food.
Addressing malnutrition in India requires a multi-sectoral approach that involves improving access to healthcare, safe drinking water, and sanitation facilities, promoting breastfeeding and adequate complementary feeding, and ensuring food security and nutrition education.
