Mrs. SHANTHI mother of 5 kids and a helpless widow from Attrambakkam Irula Tribe Colony is struggling to raise her children due to poverty. She is a victim of Child marriage and there are more young mothers like Shanthi in this Irula Tribal Community.  The Irula Tribal Community lives near the Tiruvallur District about 70 kms from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. They face  social problems such as illiteracy, health issues, malnutrition, poverty, bonded labour, child labour and child marriage.

Myrtle Social Welfare Network is a public charitable organization under section 80G and 12A of IT Act 1961, working for the development of underprivileged communities since 2003.
Myrtle works for the social and economic welfare of all classes of people irrespective of caste, creed, sex and religion. Myrtle has successfully implemented several programs  for deprived and underprivileged children, youth, women and the community for more than 16 years.

Our Vision: ”To work for the marginalized children and their community for enhancing their quality of life".

Purpose of the project
The Tiruvallur District has approximately 7057 Tribal Population. Absolute Poverty and Unemployment has resulted in severe Malnutrition among the mothers and the children, therefore leading to Child Mortality. So as a Myrtle, our purpose is to establish a  Community Development Resource and Training Center that would serve 15 Tribal and rural villages in the surroundings of Tiruvallur District. The center will be utilized to empower the tribal community in education, skill development, sustainable livlihood support and enhance their overall quality of life.

The journey so far
We found this dying community 4 years ago during the 2015 December Rains through our flood relief support. We also found that they were excluded from the society due to caste system in India. We found lack of livelihood is the reason for the poverty so which lead us to build a Community Development Resource Skill Development Center to improve their livelihoods. The resource center is 15 kms from Tiruvallur junction.  Tiruvallur is 60 kms from Chennai, the southern metro city of India.  The total structure is 1550 square.ft, Myrtle has constructed 80% of the structure on its own property (property has donated by the founder of MYRTLE)
Please visit www.myrtleindia.in  to know more about the programs undertaken in these villages.  We are looking forward for your generous support to complete this community development centre construction to help this tribal community to progress towards sustainable development.
