Mohini, a grade IV student in Thane Municipal Corporation's Savarkarnagar School had a torrid time with alphabets and Mathematical signs. Dyslexia (Language Disability) and Dyscalculia (Math Disability) make it extremely difficult for her not only to read and write, but also to coordinate activities. Four months of Mimaansa's intervention through the remedial course improved the situation for her; today she can read the clock and the calendar, do simple arithmetic, read short stories, and interact with rest of the kids in her class with more confidence. The story of little Mohini as much worries us at it inspires us; 9 out of 50 students in India have Learning Disability (LD), 6 out of the 9 students have their needs ignored. Dragged along for nearly up to eight years, just two years before their first public examination, these students are left stranded at a point of no return. Mimaansa’s “Response to Intervention” model was our response to this apathetic system. We aim to provide a better understanding of this common, but often misunderstood, condition and provide appropriate remedial assistance. Remedial Education is a support program that gives children with learning disabilities the help they need to cope with the concepts covered in classrooms. Currently present in two English Medium Municipal schools, We now plan to expand our reach to Marathi Medium Municipal schools, which have been deprived of this kind of intervention so far. We are very proud to be the pioneer to carry out this intervention for Marathi Medium Municipal schools, Thane. The cost of implementation of the programme in a Marathi school in June'14 is Rs. 300,000. Unlike Mohini, a majority become victims of the “wait to fail” model, and will continue to do so, unless we act.
