she felt embarrassed to have her photo taken so i did not push it further.
Why am I fundraising?Kanchan is a maid in govandi with 2 kids - a boy and a girl. She wants to buy a 'chawl' room and stop paying rent.No bank lends money for slum dwellers or gives home loans for chawls. Also for personal loans, banks require IT returns or form 16 etc which no maid has.
the upper limit for microfinance is around rs. 1 lakh.
The room costs rs. 10 lakhs and she has raised almost 2/3rd the amount from family and employers in deonar where she works as a part time maid in 3-4 homes. She has opened a bank account but her wages are paid in cash at about rs. 10 - 11 k / month.
Her rent is around rs. 3,500 pm, she obviously has no idea about email, social media, internet etc.I have setup a mail id for her but she does not read english.
She is a decent honest hardworking trustworthy person and has the key for our flat for over 5-6 years so she can clean while we are at work - nothing has ever gone missing, not even cash left out accidently.Even when we would leave her salary to pickup, she would not take it until we explicitly told her!
I made her open a zero balance [jan dhan] bank account with her aadhar so i can start depositing her wages for the last few months to help her build an income history but most banks require at least an year of deposits. She chose NKGSB Cooperative Bank at the chembur branch.
She has never asked for a raise so we increase it annually on our own. One year we forgot to raise it for a few months and she never said anything until we remembered.
What do I plan to do with the funds?
All the money raised will be given to kanchan so she does not have to approach extrotionist moneylenders and get financial security for her family.Since the chawl seller is refusing to take cheque payment, we will have to collect the money and give her cash.
what is her email@example.com
what is her phone?
can she reply to sms?
no - since she can't read english.
how about whatsapp?
she has no data on her prepaid feature phone since its too expensive [99% of maids in mumbai don't have data enabled unless their employer is paying for it]
what is her a/c?
Please call her directly for personal information including current address / childrens d.o.b etc.
how much would a local money lender charge a maid?
She has been quoted a minimum of 1% weekly by mortgaging her chawl room and 2% weekly without any security.
there are no fixed rates for informal cash lending and it varies significantly from one slum to another.
How can her verification be done?
You can meet her at home to survey the chawl and get additional details
Is she married? any other sources of income?
Her husband ran off with another woman almost a decade ago and she is the sole provider for her family.
