The Musahar community is possibly the most exploited and poverty stricken community in India. Musahars have been known as the rat-eating community. (‘Musa’ means rats and ‘Ahar’ means food in Hindi.) They generally live in ghettoes in the outskirts of the villages of Bihar. It is estimated that 99.5 per cent of the Musahars are landless, and literacy among them is just around 3 per cent.

“Musahars have been living in grinding poverty and sub-human conditions for centuries,” says Sinha, a 1967-batch IPS officer, who retired from service in 2005 as Secretary to Government of India. “My first contact with the community came way back in 1969 as a young police officer when I was asked to raid a Musahar ghetto to apprehend a gang of criminals. Their sub-human existence, literally living alongside pigs, was shocking and a moving experience for an urbane youngster like me who had lived a privileged existence” says Sinha.
Soon after retirement, he sold his flat in Delhi and returned to Patna as he wanted to “make some solid, meaningful contribution” to society. His quest to do something for the community led him to establish Shoshit Seva Sangh (SSS) in 2005 with the objective of providing quality education to the Musahar children.
“To my shock, little had changed in the community in 40 years,” says Sinha, who hurriedly got down to work.

He explains the importance of providing education for social change. “Knowledge has the power to liberate and emancipate. The obvious road ahead, therefore, was to provide quality education to the children of the Musahar community so that they could be empowered to compete with the best,” he says. After the formation of SSS, he started raising funds for the school, and in 2007, SSS collaborated with Samadhan, a Delhi based NGO and established Shoshit Samadhan Kendra (SSK), a fully free English medium residential school for Musahar children in Patna, Bihar. When he started visiting Musahar hamlets around Patna to persuade the impoverished families to send their children to his free school, he was ignored and his friends laughed at him. But now, the community regards him as an angel. Starting with four students, the school has total strength of 550 students today and is affiliated with Central Board of School Education (CBSE). The school provides free boarding, lodging, clothes, healthcare, and other necessities to its students.

J K Sinha was recently awarded Padma Shri for his tireless efforts in transforming the lives of unprivileged and deprived Musahar community in Bihar by proving free education and Boarding to their children for the past 1 decade.

Sinha says “The vision of the project is to bring about a silent revolution in the musahar community, which has lived in sub-human conditions for centuries. It will not be enough to give the children brought under the project proper schooling. To enable and empower these children to make a quantum jump in life, and become a catalyst of change within their community, it will be absolutely essential to see them through higher education. The school Shoshit Samadhan Kendra will have to parent these children till they reach their destined destination. In April 2019, 100 more Mushar children joined the school from all corners of Bihar, making the total number of students studying at the residential school to 650. The school needs support to cover costs of educating increasing number of students. The cost of supporting one student for a month is Rs. 4600 which includes providing all the requirements including stationary, uniform, food, lodging and medical care.

The state of the affairs of the Mushar community is a national shame. The community has been ignored and exploited for hundreds of years. JK Sinha is a on a mission to uplift this community of fellow Indians. The school needs funds to continue to provide quality education to the most exploited. Your support will ensure JK Sinha can continue to work for the betterment of the Musahar community.

Greetings dear supporters,
Hope you all have been keeping safe and well. The entire team of Shoshit Seva Sangh thanks you all for the love and kindness you have extended towards this cause. Here's a small update for your kind perusal.

Our school building

The prime objective of our initiative is to impart quality education to the poorest of the poor, the children of Musahar community of Bihar. Shoshit Seva Sangh (SSS) runs a fully free English medium residential school at Patna for these children. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) up to higher secondary (+2) level.

School Assembly

SSS has established the Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, with a view to impart quality education to the Musahar children. The school provides all the necessary facilities and the environment for imparting quality education. It has a highly qualified faculty and the student teacher ratio is 1:20. The children are provided with all the necessary facilities such as books, stationery, clothes, school uniforms, toiletries etc. apart from free boarding and lodging. The dormitories are spacious and each student is allotted a bunk-bed with bed linen, mattress etc. There is provision for indoor and outdoor games. It is expected that many of the students graduating from this school will successfully compete for admission in institutions for higher learning.

The key objective of this project is to empower the children of the Musahar community of Bihar through quality education so that they can make a quantum jump in life and become catalyst of change in their community. This community of almost 3.5 million has lived in abysmal poverty for centuries and unfortunately the benefits welfare measures for rural development has not trickled-down to them. This project aspires to create forces of change within the community which is sustainable, self-propelling and with a cascading impact. Thousands of children passing out from the school in the years ahead will become that force of change.

SSS has not withdrawn funds from Milaap so far, and have recently created two withdrawal requests of ₹2,92,883.27 and $7,432.86 to the bank account of SHOSHIT SEVA SANGH, which have been reviewed and processed. The funds shall be spent towards payment of salaries of the teachers and staff of Shoshit Samadhan Kendra.

99.5% of the Musahars are landless agricultural laborers, and literacy rate among them is the lowest, hardly around 3%. It is estimated that it shall take 4,419 years to secure 100% literacy. This will plague Bihar for years. For centuries Musahars have worked as bonded laborers. Historical records suggest that they were forced into crime by landlords and mahajans. Deprived of hope and opportunity Musahar youth have also joined the ranks of the Naxalities in Bihar particularly in central Bihar.

If the facility of quality education is given to sufficient number of students of the Musahar community on a continuing basis, it shall change the profile of poverty in due course. What  has  not  happened over centuries can be achieved in a matter of couple of decades, if sufficient support is extended to the project of SSS.

The project was launched in 2007 when the school was established in a modest building. Within a span of 5 years the school project acquired over 2.5 acres of land in Patna at a cost of almost Rs.3 crores and has constructed a residential school building which can accommodate over 1000 students in residence. The school has a foundation for a G+3 structure. Hence, the school operations can be scaled up by over 300% in the years ahead. Scalability which must be an essential element of an impactful NGO has been achieved by Shoshit Seva Sangh. The residential school building complies with all the specifications laid down by the Central Board of Secondary Education which in as an exceptional gesture has given affiliation to the school within three years of its coming into existence.

Shoshit Seva Sangh has also established long-term alliances with all its major donors in order to fulfil the common objective of empowering and ameliorating the lot of the poorest of the poor. The dimension and potential of this project are immense. It can become a model for bringing about transformational change in deprived and exploited communities not only in India but all over the world.
