More than eight million children under 6 live in approximately 49,000 slums across India and a new report ‘Forgotten voices- the world of urban children living in India’ released today does a reality check saying that they are becoming increasingly vulnerable to a variety of risks.

52%of our children in grade 5 cannot read a grade 2 text 48%of our children drop out before secondary school 76%of our children don’t enter college
A young Coal India Limited (BCCL) employee, Dev Kumar, who never went to an English- medium school, is running a free school  Pathshala for poor children. The school is managed by Dr Priyanka who is herself an IITian and life partner of Dev Kumar.

Pathshala” is an English-medium free school for underprivileged children of Katras, Dhanbad and adjoining areas studying from Play to Class V.
The school is in an area where thousands of mines-affected people reside and basic awareness and skills development are required.

The idea to start an English-medium school struck Dev when he interacted with some students of a neighbouring school and found their communication skills and general knowledge to be below average. It’s a competitive world and children from humble homes lose out if they can’t communicate and present themselves well.

This School believes in learning by practical examples and hence Pathshala adopts modern pedagogy of teaching with help of real-world examples.
Pathshala has all basic facilities such as separate toilets for girls and boys, a playground and water connection.

Pathshala Children also get a free uniform, books, stationery, sweaters,
shoes and other school-related items. Pathshala also provides free transportation facility for students residing in far-off places.

Media tagline The Telegraph

The pathshala is going to open another branch for mines affected kids on January 2018 in coal belt village named Bhagabasti (भागाबस्ती ) which is a coal slum area located in Katras, Dhanbad (Jharkhand). The idea to open a school at this place due to more than 200 kids below age 10 are engaged in COAL THEFT ( which is illegal).
