About the school

After the 2002 riots, the HM of our school, saw a lot of turmoil in the community known as Shah-e-Alam. A lot of people were left with no food, shelter and peace. This made him get into the social sector and work as a volunteer in an NGO called Sanchetna. As a Volunteer in Sanchetna, he worked in the areas of communal peace and harmony and later felt education was the key to removing all these problems.  

Being inspired by Sanchetna, our HM started a small community based primary school in 2005 called Chirag Primary School in the area known as Bombay Hotel. It catered to children who were living below the poverty line. I ran this school for three years before starting Iqra English School in 2009. It was a modest school with only thirty students in nursery. It has now expanded to over 350 students.

The main goal of our school is to provide an excellent education to underprivileged children. We’re doing this by hiring qualified teachers, partnering up with organizations like Teach for India and the Center for Environmental Education, as well as continuously upgrading our school and refining our teaching methods year after year.  Our school has been recognized by the Gujarat Government and has been given permission till 8th grade.

The school is situated in Shah eAlam area. Nearby are Millat Nagar Chandola lake ,PanwaliChawl, Musamiy’sChowl Maghdum Colony, Rasulabad Colony, , and GituBhagat Compound. Most of the people are low income and have small home based businesses. Like car repair shops, painting, and small retail shops. 

Why am I fundraising?

Iqra English School is a low income community school in Shah-E-Alam area in Ahmedabad. Within our community, there are slew of English schools. However, our school is the only one that educates students in English. We have also partnered with NGO Teach for India and we are continously improving in terms of infrastructure, teacher training and facilities.

Our problem lies in the fact that our school only has classrooms till 4th standard. So, our school immediately needs funds to construct 5 additional classrooms so that we can educate ouir 360 students for 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th standard.

Q. How can I trust you with my money?

Answer:
For donors, we will continously update them with photos and videos when the classrooms are being constructed.

Q. Why can't you get fund yourself?

Answer:
We are a low income school which charges low fees to our students. As a result, we break even each month due to paying for teacher and staff salaries, electricity, rental and maintenance cost. 

Q. Are you aided by the government?

Answer:
No. We are self-funded.
