    Umavathi K

    from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu

Umavathi, who studies 7th grade, a daughter of parents who are casual laborers hails from Vadakkuseval, Vilathikulam.
She has been struggling for the last one month with stomach ache and vomiting which increased from a mild state to severe condition. Parents took her to the local primary health center where they treated for the stomach pain and vomiting.  Yet the girl seemed to remain in the same condition as she was before the treatment.
The symptom changed now; along with the stomach pain and vomiting she began to lose her balance and fall unconsciously to the ground quite often.  Her heartbeat went as low as to 45/minute the same time she had a severe headache. When taken to the local physician, he advised taking an MRI and CT scan to diagnose the cause of all the issues with the girl.
The scan report said 2 types of tumors in her brain. Moreover, as per the statement of the Doctor, one of a tumour has broken and spoiling the closest parts of the brain. As a result of this, her condition became very serious. From the next day onwards, her vision began gradually blurring and dimming; she was not able to recognize the people.
A team of doctors from the AVM hospital, Tuticorin, first treated her for the improvement in the heartbeat and for an unbearable headache. We communicated CMC, Vellore and sent the report to them immediately. As per the review of CMC doctors, the case should be considered as a very serious one. They advised us to transport the child in an ambulance, with a technician, a nurse, and a Doctor to prevent any risks at the transportation.
They also recommended to do the 1st surgery (the removal of the ruptured tumor) in the nearest hospital with a high level of medical facilities and then we can give 10 to 15 days of rest before going through the surgery of removing the malignant tumor in the brain. The first surgery being completed they and the child is in the follow up set up. The parents have to pay Rs. 1,50,000 to the hospital. Thereafter the child has to undergo the second surgery, the major one, where the skull of the girl will be opened and then the tumor will be removed, which will cost around 2.5 to 3 lakhs according to the statement given by the AVM hospital, Tutoicorin. For this treatment which needs Laser surgery and radiation therapy
Hence the parents decided to take the child to CMC, Vellore or JIPMER, Pondicherry for this treatment.
