"He died! When we reached the hospital, they said there was no heartbeat. For 20 minutes, I watched the doctors do everything to bring him back to life." - Lakshmi
Suraj has been in this world for just a year and six months. Today he is in the ICU of Aster Hospital, struggling to recover after accidentally drowning in a deep water tank at home. He had a severe cardiac arrest and was brought to the hospital without a heartbeat. He was revived after 20 minutes of intense CPR. Still, Suraj is not out of danger. His parents are desperate to save his life.

Lakshmi cannot stop blaming herself, and will not survive if anything happens to Suraj

I was washing the dishes outside, and he was playing right next to me. I looked away for a minute, and he was gone. I panicked and searched everywhere for him. For 10 minutes, when I could not find him anywhere else, I ran towards the tank. He had drowned. I will never forgive myself for this." - Lakshmi

It has been more than 2 days since Suraj was admitted and he is still in severe need of medical treatment. He is currently in ventilation, breathing through pipes, while his mother sits sobbing right by his side, and blaming herself for this mishap.

Mounting bills are now a challenge especially because this is the only way Suraj can recover

Suraj runs a high risk of neurological problems, due to insufficient blood reaching his brain, according to the doctor who is treating him. He needs to go through brain imaging to locate if there is any structural damage.  Currently, the doctors are focusing on bringing Suraj out of the ventilation by stabilise his breathing.  According to the doctor, it is the most crucial stage for Suraj, his response to the treatment will decide his recovery. Following this the doctors will focus on neurological recovery, starting from observing his motor movements, his behavioural changes, his response to objects. It is a slow process, but Suraj stands a good chance of complete recovery, and his life can be saved with proper medical accessibility.

In the last few hours, Suraj's condition turned critical. While his medical team is doing their best, his father is unable to keep up with the expenses.

His father is a flower seller and only earns Rs. 5000/month to support his wife and three children

Suraj’s father Rakesh sells flowers and plants for a living in a pushcart, earning only up to Rs. 5,000 per month, sometimes even lesser. As we speak, he breaks down several times, praying to God for a miracle. He has no other income and the family of five solely depends on him. Rakesh and Lakshmi are struggling to continue his treatment. Rakesh is constantly on the phone, trying to get his friends and relatives to lend him some money.

“I can never get a bank loan, and I don't even have gold or vehicle to sell. I cannot lose my son because I don't have the money. They say he is critical. He needs the ventilator to breathe. His lungs are filled with water. He risks getting pneumonia, or even brain damage. He has not opened his eyes to us but under all those tubes, I can tell he is in pain.” – Rakesh, father

How You Can Help

Suraj’s parents are desperately looking for help from anyone and everyone. Currently, Rakesh has been able to raise 75,000 with the help of his neighbors, but that is not going to last him longer than a day. The total cost of the treatment will amount to 5 lakhs, and Rakesh is running out of options. You can help by donating for Suraj’s treatment. Even a small amount matters for Suraj and his family.

Together, we can save Suraj's life.
