    Son Of Puja

    from Nagaon, Assam

Puja’s 5-year-old son is happy and cheerful, he always has been – except when he asks about his father. A certain gloominess takes over the child, coupled with curiosity and a little bit of hope when he asks his mother – ‘When will he come see me? Doesn’t he want to play with me? Buy me things?

Puja has been a single mother, right from when she conceived her child to now, when he is battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia – a deadly form of blood cancer.

Even In Pain, He Asks For His Father

Puja has always found some excuse to tell her little one, and she has always tried to make up for the absence of his father. After all, how could she tell her child that his father had abandoned them to marry another woman and start another family? How could she tell him that he will probably never meet his father or know of him in this lifetime simply because his ‘father’ does not care?

He has frequent chest pains

It all started a couple of months ago, when the child started getting recurrent fevers. It was followed by body pain. When his condition did not improve despite taking all kinds of medicines prescribed by doctors in his hometown of Assam, the little one was advised to undergo further tests. But the results came back inconclusive – that’s when she made the decision to take her son to Chennai for treatment.

“He has frequent chest pains. For a while, he could not even move, let alone walk. His body was so frail, and he needed help with everything. My once-active child became a poor shadow of himself. He would keep asking for his father despite not being able to speak properly. He would ask if his father would come to save him from his pain.” - Puja

She Is Struggling To Save Him On Her Own

It was with great difficulty that Puja brought her son to Chennai for treatment. She is a student, who used to take tuition classes to help with expenses while depending mostly on her mother for sustenance. She had to borrow some money from family to start her son on initial rounds of chemo. Now, she has completely run out of money and is worried that she will have to halt his treatment due to a lack of funds.

“We are in a different city – we do not know the language, nor do we have anyone here to help us. The doctors have been incredibly helpful, but I am worried that I will have to take him back to Assam in the middle of his cancer protocol. He is my only child, my world, my everything. I have lived for him and will do anything to make sure he gets better but I need your help. Please help me save him.” – Puja
