“My elderly father dotes on our 8-year-old son. He loves his grandchild more than anything in the world. And that is exactly why he has come forward to donate his own kidney to save our child’s life. This is a huge sacrifice because, given his age, he is compromising on his health by doing this. But he is adamant – he cares about nothing more than my son’s well-being.” – Geetha, mother
Geetha and Vinayagam’s 8-year-old son’s kidneys have completely failed. He needs to undergo dialysis three times a week and is completely dependent on injections and medicines. His body is on the verge of shutting down, and only an urgent kidney transplant can prevent this from happening. Fortunately, he has a live matched donor – his own grandfather – but these poor parents are running helter-skelter trying to arrange money to save their son’s life.
His liver has also been affected; his life is hanging in the balance
Geetha and Vinayagam’s child was fine until he turned two. Thereafter, he began suffering from recurrent fevers, loose motions, and vomiting. A trip to the doctor and many tests later, they found out that his kidneys were not functioning properly. He has been undergoing some treatment or the other since then. But in June last year, his condition worsened as he found it difficult to urinate and his private parts had become discoloured. He was admitted to the ICU, upon which his parents learnt that his liver had also been affected because of toxin build-up in the body.“Our poor child has never been able to go to school except for a few months in kindergarten. His failing health has never let him have a normal existence. He is terrified of the regular dialysis sessions that he must undergo now. The needles cause him so much pain that he tells us that he cannot take it any longer. We can only cry watching him suffer.”- Vinayagam, father
‘We don’t have anything left…we can only beg you to help us’
Vinayagam, the sole breadwinner of this family, is a daily wager. His daily earnings are not enough to both pay for his son’s dialysis sessions and put food on the table. He had to borrow heavily over the past few years in order to admit his son to the hospital and keep him alive until now. At present, he is completely exhausted – both mentally and financially.“We sold everything – jewellery, land, possessions – whatever little we owned. Doctors are saying that he might need a liver transplant too along with the kidney transplant. We will not be able to arrange the money for any of this. And if not done urgently, he will not survive. Please help us.”- Vinayagam
