Misery never seems to end for this poor boy
Life was tumultuous from the very beginning for Akoju Rama Krishna and Swetha's 8-year-old son. He would often vomit his feeds and did not gain weight as expected. At six months of age, he was diagnosed with liver failure for which he underwent major surgery in 2017. Unfortunately, the surgery did not improve his condition, and a liver transplant remained the only option for him to survive.His mother donated a part of her liver to him and he underwent the liver transplant. His condition improved after the transplant and life returned back to normal. He started attending school, made a lot of friends, and loved playing with them. But, this too was not meant to last.
Getting infections once or twice a month was a routine for him, but this was different
The medicines that were being given to him to prevent damage to his newly transplanted liver were weakening his immune system. He contracted an infection at least once a month. But three weeks ago, things got nasty. He developed a fever, which initially got resolved by taking medicines from a nearby hospital, but recurred two days later. His parents then took him to the same hospital where his liver transplant was done and he was admitted. He was due to be discharged the next day after his fever settled, but something unexpected happened- his vitals and oxygen saturation began to plummet suddenly."The doctor told us that the infection had involved 85% of both his lungs. This caused stiffening in them leading to difficulty in breathing. He needed urgent paediatric ICU care with oxygen support along with high-grade antibiotics. We couldn't believe what had just happened. An hour ago, we were thanking god that it was all over and now our son was fighting for his life again. This battle has now reached a critical point.
Rama Krishna works as an assistant at a local jewelry shop and earns INR 15,000 per month. This earning is barely enough to get his family through the month. He also has an elder daughter who goes to school. The money spent during the liver transplant of his son has buried him under a lot of loans, that still need to be repaid. All the friends and relatives that were previously helpful have now turned their backs due to his constant need for money and inability to repay the loans in the near future."The doctors have given an estimate of 8 lakh rupees for the rest of my son's treatment. I have spent all I had in the last three weeks on his treatment and have nothing left now. It feels bad to face friends and family again, whose loans I could not repay. No one wants to help this time. I really don't know what to do." - Rama Krishna, as a tear trickles down his cheek
There is no way for them to afford the money for their son's treatment
"He was a very active child, always running around playing happily. He never wanted anyone to treat him differently just because he had got a liver transplant. Everyone praised his courage and enthusiasm. But now, when I see him lying unconscious and gasping for breath, it drains the life out of me. I keep questioning myself, Will he be able to make it this time? Will he overcome this hurdle too and return to us like the last time?? " - Swetha, sobbing
