Salma is now scared on most days. She is alone with her 4-year-old daughter, Shaima. And Shaima is getting sicker with every passing minute. This is the most helpless Salma has been. Her husband, Imran, is miles away from his family, doing his best to save their daughter.
“He calls every day and asks about Shaima, he says he is trying very hard to come back home but can’t. Her liver is failing and I don’t know how will I manage everything. I am scared that I might lose her.”- Salma
MDR 3 deficiency can cause yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), failure to thrive, growth deficiency, easy bleeding, rickets and persistent itchiness.Shaima has each of the above mentioned symptoms that showed up one by one over the past 4 years.
“She had jaundice since birth and her stomach was also a little swollen. We thought it would go away but as she grew older, she got even more problems, itching, stomach ache and her pale skin…We went to doctors regularly but nothing was diagnosed. They just gave medicines and they also said, it will go away. My daughter suffered for so long… I wish we knew it sooner, she would have not been through all this.”- Salma
For a parent, losing a child is like losing a piece of their heart. It’s not something they ever forget, the pain never goes away. Salma and Imran still breakdown every time they think about their 3-month-old baby. They lost her to the same disease that Shaima has now. They fear that Shaima will face the same fate.
“When I got to know about Shaima’s disease, I was devastated. I already lost a baby girl to liver disease and that makes me more scared and worried about my Shaima. What if…what if I lose her too?”- Salma
Shaima needs an urgent liver transplant and they are unable to afford the cost. They will not be able to arrange for 10 lakhs and they need help.

Her father wants to be with her, but he can't
To provide better for his family, Imran moved to a faraway city but before he could do anything, the news of his daughter getting sick reached him. He is desperately looking for opportunities that will help with the amount of the treatment but he doesn’t have that much time. She needs a transplant at the earliest or she won't make it.Shaima needs an urgent liver transplant and they are unable to afford the cost.
