10-year-old Rufus fought cancer once already. He now has a relapse. He can survive with a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, none of his family members is a match.  His younger sister Akshaya is determined to find help. The three siblings are inseparable, but now two of them are fighting to survive

Akshaya loves her brothers very much. Especially Rufus, since he always spent time with her modelling clay or building towns with cardboard. In 2017, Rufus stopped playing with his sister. He spent most of his time at the hospital. He always came back home exhausted, and often collapsed on his bed. Chemotherapy did that to him.

“His fever wouldn't go away and He had boils all over his body. He wouldn’t even eat food for days. Some days he won’t even have the strength to get up from his bed. Even in those days he would just take his book and draw because that's the only thing that has kept him distracted from all the pain that he’s going through.” - Swati, mother

The relapse means losing two children

After 4 months of harrowing chemotherapy, Rufus was declared cancer-free in March 2018. For a few months, Venkateswar Rao's only worry was saving his older son Rupesh. Rupesh needed heart surgery in 2017, but the money his parents saved went towards Rufus' treatment. Now, Venkateswar Rao has nothing left to save both his children.

When his condition is getting so worse that we will lose him if we pause treatment now. In this, Akshaya keeps asking if she can do anything. They had a little help the first time, now there are no more options

Venkateshwar Rao is a farmer in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh who grows brinjals and tomatoes to look after his family. Unfortunately, his crops failed last year and the family has been surviving on borrowed money since then. He sold his house, took loans from other farmers and applied for CM funds. This is how Rufus beat cancer the first time.

“Rufus is in a critical condition now. The doctors were generous enough to start his treatment because any delay could only harm him. Even now I have nothing, and with the hospitals bills piling up, I’m afraid I’ll have to stop his treatment. If Akshaya was a match, then the cost would have been lower. Now we have to spend over Rs. 20 Lakhs because we are dependent on the registry." - Venkateswar Rao
