    child of Santosh Meravi

    from Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh

“It’s been so long since I’ve heard his sweet little voice calling out to me. I haven’t even seen his face properly. He’s covered in tubes from head to toe. His eyes are open but he can’t see us. He can hear us but he can’t respond to us. He can barely move his hands and legs or even breathe without a ventilator! I don’t know how it got so bad that my child is now caught in a life and death struggle…” - Kunthi

They woke up to their child convulsing in the middle of the night

One night, later last month, Santosh and Kunthi were stirred from their slumber hearing little whimpers from their 3-year-old, only to be faced with the most horrifying scene they’ve ever witnessed - little Nakul’s body spasming violently as he laid beside them.

His seizures lasted hours and sent him to the brink of unconsciousness, only subsiding in the early hours of the morning. We were absolutely stunned and terrified. A similar incident had occurred a little over a year ago, but it wasn’t this severe. We were able to get him treated locally and he had been on medication all this time. I had thought he had recovered from the fits, but little did we know…” - Santosh, father

He suffers from a rare brain condition

Without wasting a single moment, these distressed parents rushed their baby boy to a local hospital in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh. He was kept under observation for over 6 hours, yet doctors were unable to bring his seizures under control, and failed to determine the cause.

At a bigger hospital in Nagpur, Nakul was diagnosed with a condition called Encephalitis. It is inflammation in the brain caused by viral or bacterial infections, and in some cases can be life-threatening.

“We had to shuffle through several hospitals, until our child was able to get proper treatment. But then he started to have breathing troubles and had to be put on ventilator support. Now, his condition is still fragile, and he needs to remain in the hospital for a few more weeks to recover. But we don’t have the money to continue his treatment.” - Kunthi, mother

They have no way of affording their child’s expensive treatment

While little Nakul has been showing small improvements, there’s a long way to go before he can go home with a clean bill of health. He needs continued PICU care to recover and his treatment will cost about INR 10 lakh rupees, a sum that is beyond his parents’ reach.

Santosh and Kunthi are both farmers and daily-wage labourers, earning a meagre income that is barely enough to support their 7-member family. With all their resources exhausted so far, they are struggling to keep up with their child’s mounting hospital bills.

“We’re both far away from home with nothing left in our pockets. We’ve spent several sleepless days and nights in this hospital, waiting on the doctors' words. We are afraid that if we let our guard down for even a second, something could happen to our son. We’ve done all we could, but now our hands are tied. That’s why we are turning to you. Please help us save our child..” - Santosh
