    Mustakeem

    from New Delhi, Delhi

“ I gave birth to my baby boy just a little over two months ago. But before my body even finished healing, I am forced to go to work as my child is admitted in the hospital. There is no other earning member in my family. But the sad truth is that no matter how hard I work, I will never even be able to afford the medicines he needs daily.” - Afsana, mother.

After her husband Wahid lost the fingers on both palms in a freak accident involving electricity in 2010, Afsana has been the sole breadwinner of her family. She was able to manage things through sheer hard work until now, where she finds herself in compromised health as a result of giving birth recently.

Their newborn son, Mustakeem, is in the hospital, fighting multiple conditions – from brain infection to respiratory distress and multi-organ failure. He will need prolonged hospitalization and intensive care to survive, but his parents are in no position to continue his treatment.

‘My baby’s body was trembling violently…we have never seen anything like it’

Baby Mustakeem was born healthy and spent a few days at home without any problems. He was drinking milk as usual and also slept well enough. Just when he turned 1 month old, he started to get seizures suddenly. His whole body would tremble vigorously and there was frothing at his mouth. Afsana immediately rushed him to the best hospital nearby as she did not want to take chances with her baby’s life.

“Doctors are saying he has many problems. At first, he just had a normal fever. The seizures were so unexpected, and now my son is struggling to survive in the ICU now. I need to save him, but I don’t know how I will be able to do that.” - Afsana, tearfully.

This mother knows the pain of losing a child, she can't bear it again

A couple of years ago, Afsana and Wahid lost their eldest son, who was just a teenager at that point. They had two children later, but nothing could fill the hole created by his demise. With Mustakeem’s birth, they had felt like their eldest child had rejoined them. But before they could enjoy being with their newborn and revel in happiness, fate pulled a cruel prank on this poor family.

“We are poor people. We do not know anything – we cannot read the reports or understand the severity of his condition. We only know that we want to save him at any cost. But we will never be able to arrange enough money, in time. Please help us.” - Wahid, father
