Diwas’ bright smile lights up any room he walks into. He’s warm, loving and always spreads joy wherever he goes. Diwas is everyone’s favourite – whether at school or in the colony where he lives in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Every time there’s a program in the neighbourhood, he would be the first to be called upon to sing and play his keyboard. Sarita and Amardeep were proud of their son and felt blessed for his good health and vigour. But on September 9, when little Diwas returned home from school complaining of severe pain near his ribs, they began to worry. Sarita and Amardeep never imagined that the niggling pain would soon turn out to be a deadly cancerous tumour.

“It feels like just yesterday that he was playing and running around. Every time my husband would come back home from the police station, he would ask him if he caught any 'villains' today, and beg for him tell him stories. There’s nothing more he wants than to get back home and to be with his father and younger brother. He just wants his old life back.” – Sarita, mother

The little fighter hasn’t let cancer break his spirit, he smiles through the pain with the hope of going back home

Diwas has been diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that starts in the white blood cells, become abnormal and grow in an uncontrolled way. Miles away from his home, Diwas is now confined to the hospital, but cancer hasn’t broken his spirit. Every time someone asks Diwas how he is, he flashes a bright, cheerful smile and says “I’m great. I’m going home in two days!” However, Diwas has a long fight ahead of him. He needs chemotherapy for the next 8 months to survive and Sarita doesn’t have the heart to tell him.

“He spent months in pain before the cancer was diagnosed. All his tests came back normal, but he was only in more pain. When we finally found out it was cancer, I worried about how I was going to tell him that he needs to stay away from school and his friends. I told him he has a small swelling in his body and needs injections for that. He’s been very brave so far, he doesn’t understand what cancer can do. All he wants is to go back home.” – Sarita, mother

His father, a policeman, doesn’t have the means to afford his life-saving chemotherapy

When the news of Diwas’ illness spread in the colony, everyone was shocked. Sarita and Amardeep received numerous phone calls and some even came to visit him in the hospital in Kolkata. Despite the support and love they’ve received amidst these turbulent times, they still need help to continue their son’s treatment. Amardeep, a policeman in West Bengal, can’t afford the 8 lakhs needed for Diwas’ treatment. He works day and night with only one intention - to save enough money for his son's life-saving treatment. However, it's not enough.

How You Can Help

Diwas is eager to go back home and to the life he once knew and loved. Sarita is now helpless. As she spends her time in the hospital with Diwas, reading his favourite books to him, she can’t help worry every time Amardeep calls her saying that he couldn’t arrange the money for his chemotherapy. Diwas can only survive cancer with your help.
